New blackface photo of Justin Trudeau is released night before Canadian election

Another alleged photo of far-left Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in blackface has apparently leaked to social media just as voters in his country are going to polls to elect a new parliament and, indirectly, a PM.

An organization called Canada Proud, which describes itself as “a grassroots group of Canadians working to defeat Justin Trudeau,” and that is “standing up for all working Canadians,” shared the purported image embedded below on Sunday night. In its tweet, the group called for the end of the “international embarrassment.”

Trudeau, the leader of the Liberal Party who was first elected to the top job in 2015, got into trouble in September 2019 when a yearbook photo emerged of the politician in blackface when he was nearly age 30 and a teacher at private day school. Similar imagery of a high-school-age Trudeau also reportedly surfaced.

The new photo might have been taken at the same “Arabian Nights”-themed gala that prompted the initial controversy.

Vaccine-passport advocate Trudeau, 49, who positions himself as a champion of diversity as well as a self-described feminist, apologized numerous times after the earlier pictures emerged

He managed to hold on to power in the election held the following month by forming a minority government after the Liberals lost about 20 seats in the House of Commons.

“I should have known better then but I didn’t, and I am deeply sorry for it. I’m going to ask Canadians to forgive me for what I did. I shouldn’t have done that. I take responsibility for it. It was a dumb thing to do,” Trudeau said at the time.

The PM’s main rival is military vet Erin O’Toole of the Conservative Party. O’Toole has been accused of more or less operating as a conservative in name only, or “Trudeau-light,” by backing away from some right-of-center policy positions during the campaign to appeal more to the middle

According to various polling data, the Liberals and Conservatives are neck and neck in the “snap” (i.e., an otherwise unscheduled) election that Trudeau called for in August.

The Liberals may have structural leverage, however, including that they often receive support for their legislative agenda from the equally left-wing New Democratic Party.

“Most of the last polls published before election day put the margin between the Liberals and Conservatives at two percentage points or less, suggesting a national race that is effectively tied. But how the vote breaks down regionally gives the Liberals the advantage in the seat count — just as it did back in 2019 when the Liberals lost the popular vote but won more seats than the Conservatives,” the CBC reported.

Among lesser third parties, the populist, pro-freedom People’s Party of Canada might pick up a few seats after the votes are counted.

Like practically all parliamentary democracies, voters in Canada only indirectly vote for the prime minister. Constituents vote for a member of parliament to represent their local district, which is called a “riding.” When parliament convenes, these representatives elect the PM, who also represents one of the ridings. A minority government may be formed in a coalition if one party fails to reach at least 170 seats.

It is generally acknowledged that this kind of offensive imagery would end the career of any politician on the right. In the U.S., Virginia’s Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam, for example, held on to his job despite a roughly similar yearbook blackface scandal.

Trudeau has plenty of defenders on social media who are dismissing the leaked photo as irrelevant old news, but some others disagree. Here is a sampling:
