Once he took the helm of CNN in May, Chris Licht began the process of turning the network away from the leftist echo chamber it had become and back toward the now-uncommon and elusive achievement known as journalism – at least by some appearances.
Among the gaggle of anti-conservative talking heads employed by the outlet, loudmouth Democrat lickspittle and ardent Trump-hater Jim Acosta would appear to be the next logical choice for termination, but it seems that at least for now, Acosta is safe.
An unnamed source who is allegedly “close” to CNN told Mediaite that rumors of Acosta’s ouster are “absolute bulls**t,” and that Licht said he had no plans to give Acosta his walking papers. A second source reiterated the same, saying that Licht had been very clear about keeping Acosta at the network.
Following the network’s attempt earlier this year to expand into paid-subscription streaming with CNN+, which crashed right into the mountain after takeoff, former Fox News correspondent and anchor Chris Wallace found himself suddenly out of a job.
Shortly after, Licht canned Brian Stelter (one of Fox News’s Greg Gutfeld’s favorite punching bags) and demoted Don Lemon from primetime to mornings where he will join Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.
As for Jake Tapper, he was promoted to a 9 pm slot. Lemon’s 10 pm spot would be replaced with anchor Alisyn Camerota and legal analyst Laura Coates.
In August, Licht warned his employees of upcoming changes at the network.
“I want to acknowledge that this is a time of significant change, and I know that many of you are unsettled,” Licht reportedly told CNN during an editorial meeting at the time staff a the time. “There will be more changes, and you might not understand it or like it.”
Still, ratings at CNN have not changed dramatically, though one of the unnamed sources insists that Acosta’s weekend show, “CNN Newsroom,” is doing well enough to keep it on the air.
The source added there were “a lot of open spots” in the CNN schedule. It is believed internally that Licht will continue to “redeploy our people in a way that he thinks their strengths really show.” While the current roster can be shuffled around as Licht sees fit, there could be “one big hire” in the works to augment the roll call of on-air personalities, but the source told Mediaite there were no plans for any other “massive shakeups” or for Licht to can anyone else.
In August, there was still speculation that other left-wing sycophants like John Berman, Brianna Keilar, and John King were on Chris Licht’s disposition matrix, as it were. Perhaps for now they are safe and securely employed as is Jim Acosta, but hope springs eternal.
