A Florida dirt bike rider was “cooked alive,” according to his lawyer, after a deputy sheriff deployed a taser at a gas station. Both now are set to face charges.
Cops got into a scuffle with the man at the Wawa convenience store in the Orlando area where he was apparently refilling his tank. In the the melee, his bike reportedly tipped over and spilled fuel.
Osceola County Deputy David Crawford reportedly activated a taser, which allegedly ignited a fireball that severely burned the suspect, identified in media accounts as Jean Baretto, 26, as well as injuring Crawford and other officers on the scene
“According to the sheriff’s office, the deputies were attempting to arrest Baretto who had fled after allegedly being part of a group of motorcyclists driving recklessly and allegedly pointing a gun at other drivers,” NBC affiliate WESH reported about the Februrary 27 incident.
The encounter was recorded on newly released, dramatic bodycam footage. Deputy Crawford is on paid administrative leave; authorities have charged him with culpable negligence, a misdemeanor.
Crawford, who can seemingly be heard allegedly advising the suspect that “You’re about to get tasered again, dude,” apparently used the device that another officer had dropped.
According to Sheriff Lopez, Crawford “was aware there was gas in the immediate area. He says ‘kill the pump, there’s gas,'” WFLA reported.

“[Osceola Sheriff Marcos] Lopez said the department’s investigation concludes Baretto should be charged with fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless driving and resisting without violence,” WESH added.
Bareto has been hospitalized for about three months so far with third-degree burns on 75 percent of his body.
“A report released by the state fire marshal says the most probable cause of the fire was an electric discharge from the deputy’s deployment of a department issued Taser device, and the ignition of the fire was accidental…The Florida’s Division of Investigative and Forensic Services’ report released Wednesday said Baretto is not expected to survive his injuries,” Fox News reported.
Bareto’s lawyer insists that his unarmed client didn’t commit a crime. “Regardless, attacking him at the Wawa, even after the fire marshal report indicated that any pursuit had ended, was a grossly excessive, unwarranted, and horrific abuse of police conduct and authority,” Attorney Mark NeJame asserted.
NeJame is calling for either the Florida Department of Law Enforcement or the U.S. Justice Department to open an investigation.
Sheriff Lopez indicated that he did not get the FDLE involved because no firearm was used in the incident.

All suspects are presumed innocent until or unless they are convicted in a court of law of any alleged crimes.

This is, at least, the second such story I’ve encountered in the last year, both featuring the same cast of characters – cops, perp (i.e., “suspect”), gasoline (tho’ other flammable materials may be substituted)… and a taser. I own (and have owned) some tasers. When you activate them they make a loud crackling and buzzing sound and emit quite noticeable sparks – bright enough to read by – it’s not a subtle effect. It’s hard to believe that anyone observing the effect, especially at close range, would not appreciate the possibility that these sparks would have a particular effect on the fumes from the flammable material into which they have been brought into contact. Perhaps the police agencies could, you know, institute a little training program before issuing their troopers “stun guns”. Just a notion…
I make more then $12,000 a month online. It’s enough to comfortably replace my old jobs income, especially considering I only work about 11 to 12 hours a week from home. I was amazed how easy it was after I tried it…GOOD LUCK.. https://www.workbz.com
Comply is always the best option
It’s not the law to taser at a service station. This is common sense. Like in Anaheim, California the police were screaming at night in front of a hotel, to a man inebriated. The Anaheim police man behavior was worse than the inebriated man. Common sense is not so common. It gives all police a black eye. In Oregon we had a very bad DA. Now retired. Lawyers as well as judges looked down on him. Police abhor bad cops. It robs them of their good name.
the bike rider cause his own problems and should be charged with assault as well as resisting arrest. He was filling bike so he could run some more.
True. The op should have waited until they left the gas station and had a plan to apprehend him. Very unwise of police, how they acted.
Simple obey the law, why did he resist ?
I agree. However, he should have been apprehended away from the gas station. That was not smart. Loss of property and life is not ok.
We’ve had police officers accused, fired, discipline d, even convicted for using force to subdue criminals . It’s always the desk people with no connection to the violence involved or needs that do their due diligence based on politics of what looks best in the news. Which means, as we are seeing, it is the reporters, the editors, and the owners that are determining ” justice”.
I have to agree but two cops on one guy that’s not a gorilla and they can’t take him down lack of training or what?? What a dumb a$$ for not listening to the cops be polite do what they say because they always win one way or the other.
I would have to say MURDER BY STUPIDITY
The guy runs from the cops and fights them. The good guy becomes the bad guy and the bad guy becomes the poor innocent guy.
Once noncompliance starts it should be open season on these people.
Hell of a world we live in.
Charge the dirtbiker, isn’t that what we do when someone is driving a get away car?
I guess we all now know fer sure that tasers and gasoline don’t go well together. Ya’d think the cops would’ve already figured that one out.
Theres an old saying , When you play with fire, you get burned. Need I say more?
I wonder how many miles to the gallon he got……..? They should have poured some more out.
LMAO surprised the pumps didn’t light up.
