Child services show up at Kentucky family’s home who had 6-yr-old run 26-mile marathon

Authorities have paid a visit to the home of a six-year-old boy who ran the 26-mile Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati with the rest of the family amidst allegations revolving around alleged child abuse.

Ben and Kami Crawford, of Bellevue, Kentucky, reportedly indicated on Instagram that Child Protective Services arrived at their residence unannounced to conduct interviews with the household last Friday apparently as a result of complaints about their son Rainier’s participation in the event.

“This is a scary process because usually children are interrogated away from parents, against their will, and their answers determine the agency’s legal right to take away the kids,” the Crawfords wrote in a long post on their page which is called “Fight for Together.”

The district attorney for Campbell County, Ky., where Bellevue is located, reportedly confirmed that CPS had a one-hour sit-down at the home. The entire family of eight apparently ran the May 1 marathon together.

The Crawfords also explained that “Someone reported that we dragged Rainier after mile 13 and across the finish line, pulling him against his will. All 8 family members and eye witnesses (including police officers), and our hours of footage reveal a different story — That Rainier is a young human who was very determined to finish and was never dragged ONCE on the entire 26.2 mile course.”

The couple also said that Rainier “adamantly decided that he wanted to run a marathon.”

In an Instagram video, the Crawfords (who also have a YouTube channel) implied that the allegations would be determined to be unsubstantiated but it could take a month or more for an official determination because of backlogged government resources in the county.

Ben Crawford noted that the entire family held hands as they crossed the finish line.

It apparently took the youngster eight hours and 35 minutes, however, to complete the mile course.

“The Crawfords said they had asked Rainier ‘numerous times if he wanted to stop and he was VERY clear that his preference was to continue,'” the New York Post added. “In an Instagram Story, a user stated that ‘Campbell County CPS’ had been notified, to which the Crawfords replied, ‘CPS has investigated us for doing much crazier things and deemed us safe parents for our kids.” The parents faced additional backlash after they posted an Instagram photo of their son holding stacks of Pringles chips, sharing that the boy was ‘struggling physically’ during the marathon.”

In perhaps an example of oversharing, the controversy was apparently prompted when the Crawfords posted in that message on Instagram referenced above that Rainier was crying because the aid stations along the way ran out of chips.

Commenting on the situation, Olympic runner Kara Goucher asserted that “I don’t know who needs to hear this but a six year old cannot fathom what a marathon will do to them physically. A six year old does not understand what embracing misery is. A six year who is ‘struggling physically’ does not realize they have the right to stop and should.”

In a nearly 25-minute video (*warning for language), which you can review and draw your own conclusions, the Crawfords insisted that the accusations that emerged via social media are unfounded.

“People read into it, they take a snippet, and they say ‘he got a kid to run a marathon for Pringles for a can of Pringles’…I’m not Gandalf,” Ben Crawford said.

Watch a report on this controversy aired by ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

  1. This is how they exact their revenge on the people who they see as having had it “better” in live than themselves.

  2. Aside from the fact that every single black family with kids should be automatically investigated by CPS since they don’t know s*** about raising a family properly, the funny thing about CPS is that almost everyone who works for them is either black (there’s an oxymoron), or some fat white spinster who’s never had sex in her life.

  3. And yet, they think it is great to give hormone suppressants and transitions surgeries to minors.

  4. But the illegal alien parent who inflicts their minor child upon a trek of thousands miles in the company of kindly cartel coyote’s is rewarded with a taxpayer funded reunion.

  5. Now family exercise with your kids is illegal? With a country where 90% of the people are out of physical shape and over weight fatties you stick out like a sore thumb if you are in the 10% minority. As for the comment from the professional marathon runner Kara Goucher about not knowing how to embrace misery at 6 years old…..the kid wasn’t running a sub 5 minute mile for 26 miles! He ran closer to a 19 minute mile which is a leisurely stroll at worst.

  6. That’s what happens when we let the government intrude in things that are none of their business. Let’s face it, the government has shown countless times they can’t do the jobs given them by the constitution, open borders come to mind! It’s insanity to think it can handle peoples day to day lives!

  7. I have a different take on this story. At least CPS investigated a report. Now what if the child WAS being mistreated? He could get help. I don’t believe this case will go anywhere because the boy wanted to participate.

    1. The problem isn’t necessarily that CPS investigated, the problems are 1, that way too many people try to tell others how to raise their kids when they are raising snowflakes & WOKEs in their own homes. My daughter & son were both doing pretty extreme athletics when they were 5-7 yo, and both still do.
The 2nd problem is that this family is not “innocent until proven guilty”, they’re assumed guilty until somebody else decides their innocence. And, of course, now social media is going to make this look evil as long as they can.

      1. That’s the way the whole country is going. A charge is leveled, the government gestapo comes in, then you have to spend time and money proving you are innocent. That’s one screwed up system.

  8. And I will bet he bet some adults. I have a nephew who at about age 10 could run a mile in just over 6 minutes. And it was his own choice. He had long legs.

  9. If witnesses included Police, it sounds like some Karen was pissed off about something and decided to use this run as their “I’ll show you” moment.

  10. We have raised a nation of wusses. Running 26 miles for a six year old is certainly a feat. Even if it took him over eight hours to do so. He looked pretty happy to me.

When I was six I could ride my bike about thirty miles a day. When I was older it was my means of transportation to take me to my girlfriends house. About ten miles away. Later when I was about 13 I stripped it down and put “nobby” tires on it. While it is fairly descriptive I’ll bet most of you don’t know what those are, Think trail bike. I was trail ridding in the woods fifty years before it became popular.

Of course this was when it was safe to turn a kid loose on his bike to ride where he wanted to go.

  11. And yet the CPS completely ignores those parents that put their kids in danger sending their kids across the border illegally. Many of these kids are raped, killed sold and never seen again.

    1. CPS is a U.S. organization that covers only the United States. What parents in other countries do is not under their control, unfortunately. What happens in other countries….. parents selling kids, dragging them across the border, etc… is the responsibility of that country. Now when the kids arrive here, CPS could get involved but won’t because Democrats can’t find the kids. They ship them off somewhere in the U.S. and they disappear.

  12. It is very possible even Kara Groucher feels pain and discomfort after a 26 mile marathon. Why would a child not feel the same? Good on this boy for trying, good on the family for pursuing a healthier lifestyle, poo-poo to all those who detract.

  13. Im making over $13k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do.

  14. First off, I have been a runner since I was in the 4th grade. I am now 57 years old and I still run. I spent 32 years in the Army and often had to teach 18 to 24 year olds how to run because they never did.

Second, had this been a kid in the family of a minority house hold where drugs are being used and dealt to customers the DHS would have ignored such blatant accusations of abuse.

  15. I used to run when I was his age, and never had any ill effects. I think adults forget how resilient and physically fit kids are. That boy was probably tired for a few minutes after, but an adult would feel the effects for days. This whole thing is silly.

    1. While I agree with you on most of your comment the fact they were investigated is beyond silly. I think the fact that an entire family was running together is testament of how strong their bond is. As opposed to many families I have seen who deal drugs, abuse physically and mentally their children and never get reported. Why? Because their neighbors just don’t care.
