Whoopi quick to defend Lori Lightfoot’s ‘call to arms’ rhetoric: ‘We in the ’60s know what that means’

“The View’ co-host Whoopi Goldberg is downplaying Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s controversial “call to arms” statement as nothing more than recycled 1960s-era rhetoric.

In the video clip above from the long-running ABC daytime liberal chat show, Goldberg provided this justification during a wide-ranging discussion/lamentation of the leaked, draft Supreme Court opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito that would strike down the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

If it is ever adopted by the majority on the high court, Alito’s ruling would return the abortion rights issue to the states to regulate individually.

In a portion of the conversation, guest co-host Alyssa Farah, who worked in the Trump administration but has now become more or less a Never Trumper, suggested that pro-choice activists have the right to peacefully protest outside the homes of justices.

“What I did think went too far,” she added, “is Lori Lightfoot…put out a statement saying this is ‘a call to arms,’ talking about the potential decision around Roe v. Wade. That is damaging, reckless language. That is not what we need right now. We need to take the temperature down and have a real discussion.”

In two tweets, Lightfoot, a far-left Democrat, messaged that “To my friends in the LGBTQ+ community—the Supreme Court is coming for us next. This moment has to be a call to arms. We will not surrender our rights without a fight—a fight to victory!”

Lightfoot’s claim, and others like it, seems to suggest that Democrat operatives have concluded that the pro-choice, pro-life controversy is not the wedge issue that they thought it was in the run-up to the November midterm elections.

As such, they have seized upon a mythical rollback of other rights as a talking point for the political establishment.

According to a New York Post editorial earlier this week, “the fact is that most of Americans are neither completely pro-life nor totally pro-choice, but a mix of both.”

The mayor of the crime-ridden city also plans to spend $500,000 to make Chicago an abortion “oasis.”

A blue state like Illinois will almost certainly continue to make the pregnancy-termination procedure legal.

“Co-host Sara Haines agreed with Farah, but went on to contrast the abortion protests with the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, claiming the former were ‘peaceful’ despite the attack by an arsonist on Wisconsin Family Action, a group staunchly opposed to abortion, at its Madison headquarters, another arson attack on an Oregon pro-life group’s office, as well as reports of vandalism against churches,” Fox News observed.

Goldberg, who seems to be a fan of a sex strike to protect abortion rights, defended Lightfoot.

“I think that Lori, when she says ‘a call to arms,’ that’s something that we in the ’60s know what that means. That doesn’t mean to go and do any fighting. That means to pay attention and make sure you’re there voting, doing what you need to do,” Goldberg insisted.

Earlier in that portion of the discussion, Farah explained the protests outside the conservative justices’ homes were consistent with the right to peacefully assemble under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution but that “the more appropriate venue is the steps of the Supreme Court. I worry it could begin to look like intimidation.”

Goldberg chimed in that Alito’s opinion also “looks like intimidation.” Co-host Joy Behar then opined that it was appropriate that Justice Alito lost his “freedom of choice” because “he can not leave the house easily.”

Former Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, an expert on Chicago politics, asserted on his blog that Lightfoot’s priorities are fundamentally misplaced.

“Failing politically, having lost her city, unable to deal with violent crime, she’s become desperate. She’s in need of enemies, to help her rally support,” he wrote.

Commenting on her tweets, Kass added “That’s nonsense. But it does it matter to the mayor, who has no clue on dealing with violent crime? A mayor on the hunt for enemies as she casts for political cash from Planned Parenthood. Lightfoot is a former federal prosecutor, an officer of the court, who constantly complains about ‘gun violence.’ Yet she wants to war with the Supreme Court and issues a ‘call to arms?’ She seems to have lost her mind…”

Parenthetically, as many have already observed, the my body, my choice, body-autonomy cohort remained silent when thousands of women (and men) were forced out of their jobs across the country, including those in the nursing profession and first responders, because of a COVID vaccine mandate.

  1. If it weren’t for a double standard, the libtards would have no standards at all . . .

  2. The left wield their ignorance like a club.
It is a weapon that they have in abundance.

  3. But, Whoopi (born Caryn Johnson), it’s not the 60s anymore. So, shut up Caryn.

  4. Chicago is already dangerous enough so having thousands of baby killing tourists will not change anything! They can do whatever their STATE LEGISLATURE passes as a LAW! I’m sure it will be fair and healthy!!

  5. Lightfoot was incredibly wrong to say it and Whoopi is incredibly wrong to defend it.

Everyone in Chicago knows Lightfoot is one of the greatest political failures in Chicago history, she does not put Chicago first ahead of the lame leftist goals, and she clearly meant it as a call to ARMS!

  6. Most of us who were born in the fifties and came of age in the sixties and seventies have grown up and realized long ago how stupid we were when we were young and knew everything.

Unfortunately, many seniors in hollyweird think they’re still young and still know everything.

  7. I wouldn`t put Lightweight or Goldberg in charge of a roll of toilet paper…..even if I had 2 rolls!

  8. As if the black person with the spider on her head really knows anything .
This POS is just that , full of bullshit coming out of her big mouth .

  9. So Fanny Fat ass defends Beetlejuice…one moron defending another…well, duh. Why do they get air time? FJB AND ALL WHO SUPPORT THIS FARCE.

  10. Stvpid tvat. Yes, those of us from that era know EXACTLY what it means.

The era of the Weather Underground, the Black Panthers, the Zebra Murders, the SLA, the FALN and a host of other violent left wing extremist groups.

  11. I wonder if my local weather channel posted day after day after day how the OTHER weather stations were wrong…I wonder if that would interest anybody. I guess so.
