White House press secretary Jen Psaki had a rather subdued response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott making good on his promise to truck migrants from his state to Washington D.C. in protest of President Joe Biden’s lax border policies.
“These are all migrants who have been processed by CBP and are free to travel and it’s nice Texas is helping them reach their final destination as they await immigration proceedings,” she said. “Immigration policy and law is overseen by the federal government.”

This is a far cry from her previous response to Abbott’s decision, which she called a “publicity stunt.”
“Well, I’m not aware of what authority the governor would be doing that under,” Psaki said in response to a question from Fox News’ Peter Doocy. “I think it’s pretty clear this is a publicity stunt. His own office admits that a migrant would need to voluntarily be transported and that he can’t compel them to, because, again, enforcement of our country’s immigration laws lies with the federal government, not with the state.”
On Wednesday, the first busload of migrants was delivered just blocks away from the Capitol. A second bus is reportedly already on its way and officials claim they will send as many buses as needed to get their point across.
One of the people most upset about this was Sen. Chris Murphy, D – Connecticut, who claimed that Republicans clearly don’t see migrants as “human” and arguably missing the point of the whole action.
“Republican leaders don’t see immigrants as human. Just props to get some laughs and clicks,” he said. “And let’s be 100% clear. The idea was to savage Biden and Democrats no matter what they did.”
It remains to be seen how many busloads will be necessary for Biden to understand that his policies are unpopular in border states.
