Tuesday in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s currently crime-ridden New York City, a group of street hooligans backed by a crowd of chanting supporters used harassment to drive two NYPD officers out of their so-called “hood.”
As they harassed the cops, they recorded themselves with their phones. One of these videos eventually wound up in the hands of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, the largest police union for NYPD cops.
On Friday, three days after the original incident, the NYC PBA shared the video to Twitter with a warning about the city’s far-left leadership.

Listen to the hate and harassment directed at these two @NYPD30Pct Neighborhood Coordination Officers. Why? No reason apart from the uniform.

In the tweet, the union described the two officers inside the cruiser as neighborhood coordination officers (NCOs).
According to the NYPD, NCOs “serve as liaisons between the police and the community, but also as key crime-fighters and problem-solvers in the sector. They familiarize themselves with residents and their problems by attending community meetings with neighborhood leaders and clergy, visiting schools, following up on previous incidents, and using creative techniques and adaptive skills.”
They’re part of a “new patrol paradigm” that’s “built on improved communication and collaboration between local police officers and community residents,” according to the NYPD.
They are, in effect, a response to claims that police officers aren’t doing enough to connect with the communities they protect and serve. And yet, even they clearly weren’t immune to the anti-cop antics and hate of street hooligans.
In the video above, the hooligans surrounded the officers’ cruiser and then proceeded to yell obscenities at them, placed a pink toy pig on their cruiser and shrieked for them to “get the f–k out of the f–king hood … you piece of s–t.”
The strategy eventually worked and the two cops left the scene, a move that, while understandable, ultimately left the neighborhood without protection.
In a statement to Fox News, a source within the NYPD suggested that the two officers may have felt there was simply no other option.
“Cops are shook right now — the city politicians don’t have their backs. The last thing they want to do is take action in good faith and the situation goes wrong, and now they are the bad guys,” the source reportedly said.
But according to a new Vox/Data for Progress poll published this week, a majority of every demographic — Democrats, Republicans, blacks, whites, Hispanics, the elderly, the young — would feel “more safe” with police patrols in their neighborhood.

What makes this finding — from a left-wing outlet, to boot — so extraordinary is that it belies the narrative from the left that all cops are bad and that Americans want nothing to do with them. It’s why leftists were left utterly confused by the findings.

Data shows that leftists tend to be wealthy individuals — the type who likely live in upscale, gated communities. Because of where they live, perhaps they don’t have to contend with the unfortunate experience of being victimized.
“The poor and the unemployed are twice as likely to become victims of violent crime and nearly three times more likely to suffer emotional damage as a result of being attacked, according to research published today,” The Guardian reported back on April 18th, 2006.
Its report continued, “The study by the Institute of Public Policy Research shows that people living in the most deprived neighbourhoods are more than twice as likely to be mugged and feel “very worried” about being physically attacked as those who live in the most affluent neighbourhoods.”
While it’s been awhile since 2006, some truths are inexorable.
In 2012, the Prison Policy Initiative think tank published data also confirming that “[t]he poor, not the rich, are most often the victims of burglary.”
Of course, risks like this aren’t evenly distributed… It’s the people who definitely don’t have money to buy a SimpliSafe system that are MOST LIKELY to be burglarized. (@PrisonPolicy). (6/9) https://t.co/s8wTchrfpE pic.twitter.com/avPLvFWuUg

Five years later, the Heartland Alliance confirmed in its own study that those “living in poverty are more likely to become victims of violent crime than higher income earners,” as reported at the time by the Associated Press.
This truth didn’t appear to matter to the hooligans, perhaps because they themselves are the ones responsible for victimizing the poor and needy — and thus they’d be more successful in their endeavors without the police present?
But what about the leftists, from Twitter bellyachers to Democrat politicians, who constantly attack and disparage the police. What’s their excuse?
