Police say a parking feud turned deadly—and the suspect is an illegal migrant

An Ethiopian migrant reportedly killed three U.S. citizens in Minnesota on Monday because of a dispute over his apartment parking garage contract.

Charging documents reviewed by Saint Paul station KSTP show that 30-year-old Ethiopian migrant Tsegaab Binessu’s roommate called the police after the shooting to tell them that his roomie had gone to the Davern Park Apartments leasing office, gotten into an argument, and opened fire.

The argument concerned Binessu’s $65/month parking garage contract. He’d quit his job as a trucker two months earlier and was planning on enlisting in the Navy but needed to first sell his car and cancel his garage contract.

According to apartment staff, Binessu first called, only to be told that he would need to keep paying because he’d just renewed his contract. In response, he told them that he would come to the office to talk about it in person.

“Surveillance video from the apartment office shows [the victims later] talking to Binessu when the tenant suddenly lifts his shirt, pulls out a gun and points it at them,” according to KSTP.

He reportedly opened fire, killing 56-year-old Dena Silcox and 43-year-old Adam Wilwerding.

Binessu proceeded to walk down a hallway and out of the surveillance camera’s view. He then allegedly opened fire four more times, reportedly killing 25-year-old Nansi Fuentes Zambrano, after which he left in her car.

When later interviewed by the police after being apprehended, Binessu was full of third-worldist complaints.

“Binessu complained about ‘the American system,’ saying he unsuccessfully tried to bring his wife and kids from Ethiopia for seven years and blamed it for his divorce,” according to KSTP.

He also accused the apartment staff of having treated him unfairly because of his race and immigration status.

“We’re so shocked by this,” Silcox’s father, Bob Silcox, told Minneapolis station KARE after his daughter’s murder. “She did not deserve to go out this way.”

“She had a heart that was unmatched,” her younger brother Erik Silcox added. “A fire in her belly. She had a passion for life.”

She’d been working at the apartment complex for nearly a decade.

Zambrano, the 25-year-old, had meanwhile been at the complex for six years.

“She’s touched a lot of lives, and I hope she left knowing that,” her friend Alexa Murray said.

Other friends of the deceased young lady described her as kind, selfless and a friend to everyone.

“She deserved so much more than what was given to her,” friend Estreya Velazquez said, adding that Zambrano had devoted herself to her family.

Davern Park Apartments resident Ashley Chester, who has been a resident, described Wilwerding, who went by AJ, as someone who’d been beloved by all tenants.

“I’m just so happy that I was able to give AJ his flowers while he was here,” she said. “How good of a person he is, it showed in his character. So, being able to even enjoy him for the short period of time that I did, I’m thankful for that. For all of them, actually.”

Chester stressed that all three victims were good people.

“They were just good people, really good people, and you can tell because there’s residents that’s been here for years, and that says a lot,” she said, adding that neighbors were leaning on one another as they grieved.

“We’re definitely together, and we’re going to stay together,” Chester said. “We’re family now, at this point.”
