The man who left his female friend to die in a burning car while he got help for himself was not a criminally negligent coward, according to his brother.
Instead, Waheed Ahmad, 21, portrayed his brother as a hero who tried, in vain, to save her life, the New York Post reported.
“He did not just run away from the scene. He lost his phone in the car [and was] unable to call the ambulance,” he said of his brother, Saeed Ahmad, 23, who has been charged with criminally negligent homicide, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, speeding and leaving the scene of an accident, according to the Post.
The older Ahmad crashed his car on Friday, then hailed a can to get himself to the hospital while his friend, Harleen Grewel, 25, was left to burn alive.
“He tried to get her out. That’s how his hands and his legs and his neck got burned. He couldn’t get her out. The fire got too crazy. It just burned so quick,” the younger Ahmad argued.
He told the Post that his brother “was in pain” and “the ambulance wasn’t coming,” therefore he got a cab to take him to the hospital.
“Everything is chaos right now. We are shocked. It’s horrifying for the girl and her family,” his brother said.
“He’s emotionally distraught. Every time they ask him about what happened, he’s crying and screaming. His friend burned alive,” he added.
