Horror struck at a Moroccan zoo when one of its elephants killed a young girl on Tuesday.
The elephant inexplicably grabbed a rock and flung it more than 10 yards over a ditch and wooden barrier at the Zoological Garden of Rabat, where it struck the 7-year-old in the head, the Huffington Post reported.
The zoo closed the elephant exhibit while it investigated the incident.
“The behaviour … of any animal is very complex,” zoo veterinarian Abderahim Salhi told the Post, “and wild animals are unpredictable.”
“We are all surprised. We don’t yet understand,” he said.
The zoo showcases animals in replicas of their natural habitats which, in the case of the elephants, would include the same type of rocks, according to the Post.
“We are very sad at what happened, but it would be wrong to blame the elephant. This was not premeditated,” Salma Slimani, who is in charge of zoo administration, said.
