What went down at DNC when cameras were off is the stuff Orwellian nightmares are made of

You’d be forgiven if you confused the Democrat National Convention with a scene from George Orwell’s “1984”.

It started when Clinton appeared on the giant screen to address her subjects following Alicia Keys’ performance on Wednesday, and continued Thursday when the crowd was given a specific set of commands for a “card stunt.”

“Get ready to hear about your exciting role in this historic celebration,” a booming, mechanical voice said over the loudspeaker. “You will be performing a card stunt.”

Have a listen:

The gimmick was designed to “create a unified, patriotic picture.”

“You have your card for the stunt folded in a bag on your seat. Do not remove or open it yet. Each card is assigned to your specific seat, so make sure your card stays at your seat,” the voice instructed.

But the cameras couldn’t tell what the cards were supposed to say, and the whole stunt was a big fail.

To say that it gave people the creeps is an understatement:

Attendee David Dayen told McClatchy DC that the cards were supposed to spell “stronger together” in red, white and blue across the arena.

But social media remained confused by the entire, creeptastic thing.
