After a heated spat earlier in the day, Donald Trump seemed to back off of his fight with Pope Francis; however, social media did not.

During a CNN Town Hall Thursday night, Trump took a much softer stance and indicated that he thought the pope was misinterpreted.

“I think he said something much softer than was originally reported by the media,” he said.

Trump said he didn’t think the disagreement was a fight and referred to the pontiff as a “great guy” as he offered to meet with his holiness “anytime he wants.”

The Republican presidential front-runner said he believed the pope was misinformed by the Mexican government but also insinuated that the pontiff’s complaints about a wall were hypocritical considering the wall that surrounds Vatican City.

“He’s got an awfully big wall at the Vatican,” he told Anderson Cooper.

That sentiment was a common one earlier in the day on Twitter.
