O.J. missed out on ‘Terminator’ role because producers didn’t think he was a believable killer

One of the most iconic NFL players of the late 20th century missed out on the starring role in what was also one of the most iconic movie franchises because producers didn’t think that people would believe that O.J. Simpson was capable of being a killer.

The tidbit of Hollywood trivia comes courtesy of Arnold Schwarzenegger who would end up landing the role of the futuristic time-traveling killing machine in director James Cameron’s 1984 film “The Terminator,” a role that he would later reprise in Cameron’s 1991 sequel “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” the part that arguably made him into an action movie superstar and later, the last Republican governor of left-wing hellscape California.

The now 75-year-old Austrian bodybuilder who truly tapped into the American dream dished the details in the new Netflix docuseries “Arnie” which details his life.

In the docuseries, the director recalled that Orion Pictures cofounder Mike Medavoy had “whittled down the cast to Simpson as Terminator and Schwarzenegger as Kyle Reese — who was later played by Michael Biehn,” according to The Daily Mail.

“’I had been told by Mike Medavoy that the movie was all cast,’ Cameron said, recalling how Medavoy told him: ‘I got this all worked out. OJ Simpson and Arnold Schwarzenegger’,” the outlet reported. “I said, “Well, which is which?” Those two names just sounded so wrong to me,’” although he warmed up to Arnold after seeing him on the set with his physique.

Schwarzenegger said in the series that “no one” at Orion was convinced that OJ could make a convincing killer.

“During our conversation, it became clear no one was hooked to OJ Simpson playing Terminator because he could not be sold as a killing machine,’ the actor said,” Schwarzenegger said.

And the rest, as they say, is history.
