Obama plays ‘birther’ card to take subtle jab at Trump while stumping in Wisc

Former President Barack Obama played the “birther” card on Saturday while campaigning for U.S. Senate hopeful Mandela Barnes and incumbent Gov. Tony Evers in Wisconsin.

During a rally in Milwaukee, in remarks that Obama obviously had in his back pocket, he at least indirectly seemed to obsess over Donald Trump (a preoccupation shared by Democrat officials generally), a politician who is not on any 2022 ballot.

In so doing, the self-involved ex-POTUS, who is pitching in to help Democrats with the midterm elections right around the corner, perhaps seemed to smear Wisconsin voters who are not supportive of the far-left Barnes.

“I want to say something here. I know that there are some folks, maybe not in this auditorium but elsewhere in Wisconsin, who think — and I know these ads are running this way — just because Mandela’s named Mandela, just because he is a Democrat with a funny name, he must not be like you. He must not share your values….it sounds pretty familiar, doesn’t it? Mandela, get ready to dig up that birth certificate,” Obama said to the approving, enthusiastic crowd using that familiar campaign cadence that sounds like an affectation.

“Remember when that — that’s the good, old days — remember when that was the craziest thing people said? Think about that…Now, it doesn’t even make the Top 10 list of crazy,” he added, with both candidates sitting behind him on the stage.

Obama did not specify the alleged anti-Barnes campaign commercials presumably aired by Johnson or anyone else to which he was referring.

During the same rally, Obama — without evidence — accused Johnson of planning to cut Social Security and Medicare, a tired trope that the Dems roll out in every election cycle.

As a private citizen and receiving much condemnation, Donald Trump controversially questioned Obama’s U.S. citizenship status, which could have posed an eligibility issue under Article II of the U.S. Constitution which requires the president to be at least age 35 and “a natural born citizen.” At that time, Trump demanded that Obama release his long-form birth certificate.

In September 2016, GOP candidate Trump, a former Democrat and independent who would subsequently be elected as Obama’s successor, finally announced he believed Obama was born in America.

If polling data is accurate, Sen. Johnson appears to be well-positioned for reelection.

Businessman and U.S. Army veteran Tim Michels is locked in a tight contest with Evers.

While separately stumping for the lockdown-loving Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Obama painted the disturbing home-invasion attack on Paul Pelosi as a form of political violence, which may or may not turn out to be as accurate as his Social Security allegation.

He also got into it with a heckler to the dismay of the attendees.

Relying on a recognizable refrain, there was reportedly some further heckling at the event (*Warning for language).

Whitmer appears to be in a statistical tie with GOP challenger Tudor Dixon.

Mandela Barnes, currently Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor, previously seemed to characterize the founding of America as “awful” in a video that was unearthed around the July 4 holiday.
