A former Hillary Clinton staffer who was embroiled in scandal isn’t ruling out a possible run for office, according to a recent interview.
Huma Abedin, the vice-chair of Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and a major player in the non-secure email server investigation, isn’t opposed to starring in her own campaign.
The longtime Clinton staffer told John Catsimatidis on the WABC 770 AM radio show “Cats Roundtable,” that while she is more comfortable behind the scenes she hasn’t ruled out a run for office.
“I’m in that phase of my life where I say, ‘Never say never,'” Abedin said.
Is the Democratic Party ready to forgive and forget and endorse a candidate who was under investigation for improper handling of classified documents? In a bazaar story made for Hollywood, during a 2016 investigation into Abedin’s husband, disgraced former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner, officials found more than 18 classified documents on his laptop that belonged to his wife, the then-chief of staff for Secretary of State Clinton.
Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to transferring obscene material, lewd messages, and photos of himself to a 15-year-old girl from North Carolina. But both Clinton and Abedin were unpunished for their careless handling of classified docs, allowing them to be administered by an individual under investigation as a pedophile.
Citing her work with Clinton and time as Weiner’s wife, Abedin said she is very familiar with the demands of public office.
“I was married for a long time to one of, I think, the most dynamic politicians out there and successful — and I worked for another politician,” the former White House intern during the Bill Clinton administration said. “I loved supporting them. I’ve always been ambivalent about me being out in public myself.”
Promoting her memoir, “Both/And,” which was published in November 2021, Abedin discussed her relationship with Weiner, her time as a Clinton aide, her childhood in Saudi Arabia, and her Muslim faith during the interview.
“I’ve always worked behind the scenes, but I love my country,” Abedin said, leaving the door open for her to step into the spotlight.
