Billionaire CEO Elon Musk had been notably absent from his preferred social media platform of late and the posts he offered to break his Twitter silence featuring the Pope and Sonic the Hedgehog have expectedly raised eyebrows across the internet.
Known for speaking his mind, the entrepreneur and self-styled “free speech absolutist” had evidently taken a 10-day hiatus from Twitter. While major stories like the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the sentencing of Ghislaine Maxwell for child sex trafficking were reported, Musk hadn’t tweeted a peep since June 21.
That changed Friday evening with a series of posts that suggest the businessman may be working through some personal issues a few days after turning 51-years-old. “Honored to meet @Pontifex yesterday,” Musk captioned a photo of himself and four of his sons meeting Pope Francis.

This image was the last in the series of initial remarks that began with a tribute to 23-year-old YouTuber Technoblade who lost his battle with cancer.
The billionaire wrote, “Wise words from SJM” to accompany an image of the video game character Sonic the Hedgehog with a quote from the film “Wreck-It Ralph.”

The quote explained the risks that the main character of the 2012 film was taking by entering into worlds that were not his own. While acknowledging that it is an obvious nod to Technoblade’s mortality, the timing and Musk’s subsequent posts caused many to speculate this is something he himself may be struggling with.
Moments later he posted, “Feeling … perhaps … a little bored?” before later sharing a photo of him and his ex-wife Talulah Riley from his 40th birthday celebration.

Riley told the Independent in an interview, “He’s a great friend. He looks out for me. We are in a happy place now, where we’re good to each other, which is really nice. I have the utmost love for him,” and noted they have a “very deep love and connection.”
The same day that Musk had begun his 10-day stint of silence on Twitter, it had been reported that one of his eldest sons, Xavier, had filed paperwork to legally change his name and gender through the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County.

Choosing to go by Vivian Jenna Wilson, court documents detailed the reasoning for the change as, “Gender identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.”
Neither prior to nor since that story came out has Musk publicly addressed the relationship with his son or his son’s transgender identity. However, in light of that story and the remarks that he has recently made, it is plausible that the entrepreneur’s forays into other fields, most notably the political arena, have impacted his familial ties.
Musk caused quite a stir when he revealed that he had voted Republican for the first time when he cast his ballot for now-Rep. Mayra Flores (R-Texas) as part of a special election. Predicting a “Massive red wave in 2022” he then revealed that he was leaning in favor of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) as a pick for president in 2024.
