Operation Epic Fury appears to be a colossal success. News reports are full of information confirming the neutralization of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, ballistic missiles, drones, navy, and other warfighting capabilities. That includes taking out the head of the snake, Ayatollah Khamenei. To say that the US and Israeli militaries did a superb job is an understatement. However, the question remains—who will run the country? Speculation is that the son of the late Ayatollah, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been chosen as the new head of state.
It sounds like a continuation of the same regime. If so, Iran will undoubtedly continue to develop missiles, drones, and nuclear weapons. In other words, we are right back to square one—where we were last year when our B2 bombers destroyed Iran’s main nuclear sites. With the same nutcases effectively still in power, Iran’s ability to threaten us with nuclear weapons may take one, two, three or more years, but it is inevitable. Meanwhile, the likelihood of a popular uprising continues to be negligible for one reason—the reports omit any reference to internal ground forces, specifically those responsible for the brutal murder of perhaps 30,000 Iranian civilians.
We don’t seem to know who was responsible for all the murders. The Republican Guard? The regular army? Police and militia forces controlled by the regime? I see nothing in the news that suggests our government is taking that into consideration. Without an answer to that question, any newly constituted government is free to impose the same repressive policies that have kept the Iranian populace intimidated.
Maybe I missed something, but I was under the impression that Trump’s goal was regime change. Without regime change, all the military strikes are a waste of time and money. We have to eliminate these genocidal Islamic maniacs before we can hope to leave behind anything resembling a peaceful Middle East. That includes defanging the wackos on the ground. It is estimated that there are a million armed paramilitary forces in the country. We have to find a way to neutralize them and fast.
If we don’t have the answer, perhaps the Israelis do. They seem to have excellent intelligence inside Iran. We don’t. Has the Trump administration factored this into the equation? When will they let us know? Now would be a good time.
