Kevin McCarthy hits keep coming, new leak catches him calling Trump’s actions ‘atrocious and totally wrong’

U.S. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) reportedly can be heard on more leaked audio disparaging former President Donald Trump.

Two New York Times reporters who are hawking a book about the 2020 election cycle released the new audio and shared it with CNN on Jake Tapper’s show “The Lead” as seen in the clip embedded above.

In the audio, which supposedly occurred on January 8, 2021, two days after the breach of the U.S. Capitol, McCarthy, who is poised to become House Speaker if the GOP regains control of the chamber, apparently described Trump’s behavior — perhaps  in the context of the Stop the Steal rally — as “atrocious and totally wrong.”

Another key takeaway, which is perhaps even more concerning, is that McCarthy allegedly dismissed the idea of removing Trump from office under the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in the waning days of his term because “it takes too long.”

The latter amendment can come into play when a commander in chief “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” Parenthetically, some critics have asserted that the amendment should be invoked for the incumbent president based on his often confused demeanor.

Times reporter Alexander Burns told Tapper that “You don’t hear Kevin McCarthy saying in that moment, ‘you know, I don’t think it would be appropriate to invoke the 25th Amendment or I’m not sure it was designed for a situation like this.’

“His concern is it would take too long,” Burns continued, “and the reason why he is worried that it could take too long is that the Cabinet can vote to remove the president, and then the president can challenge that, and then it goes to a vote of the Congress, and then you’re in a situation that’s not all that different from impeachment.”

Lamenting that the country was very divided, McCarthy also expressed on the audio a desire to meet with President-elect Biden to enable a “smooth transition,” encouraged Trump to do so as well, however unlikely, and spoke against the idea of impeachment 2.0.

“What the president did is atrocious and totally wrong…I do think the impeachment divides the nation further and continues to divide it even greater. That’s why I want to reach out to Biden. I wanted the president to meet with Biden, but that’s not going to happen. I want to see about us meeting with Biden, sitting down, a smooth transition to show that we can continue to keep those statements going,” McCarthy supposedly said on the call.

The two reporters claimed, however, that Trump told them that McCarthy never pressured him to resign and that his rhetoric was the result of an “inferiority complex.”

Times reporter Jonathan Martin pointed out that despite the tough talk, McCarthy, a full-fledged member of the GOP establishment, was nonetheless socializing with Trump at Mar-a-Lago by the end of January.

Last month, audio emerged in which McCarthy reportedly urged Trump to resign during a post-January 6, 2021, call with House leadership. McCarthy has denied ever doing so.

Although this survey predated the newest revelations, McCarthy’s approval rating with GOP voters has supposedly rebounded since the earlier audio leak.

“Morning Consult published new polling numbers — taken between April 29 and May 2 — on Wednesday that show McCarthy with 40 percent support among GOP voters, while 28 percent said they had an unfavorable view of McCarthy,” The Hill reported. A previous poll showed McCarthy clocking in at 31 percent.

For now, anyway, McCarthy is still the favorite to get the gavel (if Republicans win) apparently because he is such a prodigious fundraiser for his colleagues. In other words, lawmakers are following the money.

“House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s emergence as an unrivaled force in Republican Party fundraising has put the 57-year-old lawmaker from California on a glide path to the speakership, provided his party sweeps the November midterm elections,” the Washington Times reported on April 12.

  1. McCarthy needs to step down. He certainly should not be speaker of the house…..he will be a carbon copy of Pelosi

  2. McCarthy is not a RINO…..but he is a deep stater…..and therefore an even greater threat to America

  3. So much for RINOs being an endangered species! Just look at McCarthy, McConnell, etc., etc. who prove otherwise.

  4. Sounds like it is time for another GOP congressional caucus standing ovation for quisling Kevin. Cowardly representatives of the people keep on clapping. There is a tree in your neighborhood with your name on it.

  5. Good article. McCarthy has been unmasked as the true traitor that he is. These kind of republicans are why I am not a Republican, but an independent that now will never support such insanity. FJB. GO BRANDON. TRUMP 2024.

  6. He suffers from californitis which we will try to make terminal to political careers come Election Day. Anyone who lives in virus infected California eventually becomes infected. It’s the only way to get lots of $$$$$$.

    1. Sorry Mary Anne. I am a conservative who lives in California. And just like the other 9 of us here, I will NEVER become infected…..because they make us wear a mask.

  7. I don’t trust Mr. McCarthy and do not plan on supporting him in any way.

    1. Nor do I. IMO, he’s a backstabber, and a very weak Minority leader. Mealy-mouthed. Wonder if he’s moved out of the pollster’s house, yet.

      1. Backstabbed is a nice word for this traitor. Treason is the reason we should rid ourselves of such garbage.

  8. No more Rinos as Speaker of the House!!
    We had two others prior.
    No more!!
    American First for Speaker only!!
