Sounding more like a traditional liberal, Bill Maher is lamenting that the January 6 commission will become the “Hunter Biden commission” if the GOP takes control of Congress in the November elections.
A free-speech champion and presumed civil libertarian, Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” has won plaudits for forcefully disagreeing with the woke narrative in various ways, but in this instance, he reverted to sounding like a hyperbolic, partisan Democrat calling for jail time for insurrectionists.
With a panel consisting of former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) and MSNBC’s Ali Velshi, Maher began a segment on his show on Friday evening by disagreeing with House Democrat Jamie Raskin that the upcoming J6 committee hearings will constitute a Watergate-level game-changer.
“I think they won’t,” Maher insisted. “I think everyone in this country is already on Team Red or Team Blue. And this is what the Democrats think is going to be the game-changer? You want to get people ginned up: mention Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That hits them right in the gut,” he continued, sarcastically.
“Inflation and immigration, yes, that’s what the election is gonna be about,” Maher, who has slammed Twitter for censoring the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, observed.

Trying to come across as statesmanlike or as the voice of reason, Jones then sought to clarify what the “bipartisan” J6 group sought to achieve.
“And we hope not a recession. But, you know, things are not looking good. But look, these hearings do have the possibility of, maybe not being a game-changer, but at least letting the public know what’s going on. And I think early on, the January 6 commission did a very, very good job of just methodically and efficiently moving forward on trying to figure out what happened. We have to remember that the role of the January 6 Commission is not to put people in jail. It is not to indict Donald Trump. It is not to indict anybody. It’s to tell people what happened in a nonpartisan fashion,” Jones explained.
When an impatient Maher wondered about putting people in jail for “insurrection,” Jones noted that prosecuting offenders is the job of the U.S. Department of Justice rather than Congress.
“It is the job of [U.S. Attorney General] Merrick Garland, isn’t it? What? What are we waiting for? I mean, you know what? They got about six months before the election, which the Democrats are gonna get wiped out. They’re not going to be a Democrat between Massachusetts and ‘Pacoima’…and then the January 6 commission becomes the Hunter Biden Commission, right? So what is the plan there on the Democratic side? Where, why where is Merrick Garland? Where is the indictment?” Maher asked rhetorically.
Watch (the discussion begins at about the 30-minute mark):
Throwing shade (of course) on ex-President Trump for supposedly pushing around his AG, Velshi opined that the wheels of justice move slowly, and spewed the tired talking point that democracy is at stake in the November elections.
Maher apparently is unaware that, according to the Associated Press, “More than 200 people have pleaded guilty and more than 80 have already been sentenced,” as of mid-February. Many were charged, however, with trespass-related crimes.
Critics have claimed that some of the defendants have received disproportionately harsh prison sentences, while others, according to their supporters, have been held in pretrial detention without the possibility of bail in violation of their due-process rights.
The above-mentioned section of the 14th Amendment disqualifies anyone from federal or state office who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion.”
In support of their point of view, the panel alluded to an alleged, unverified text message in mid-January 2021 from U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows about the possibility of President Trump declaring martial law, which her lawyer has said Greene doesn’t remember and is “innocuous” in any case.
Leftists have gone to court in Georgia to try to kick MTG off the ballot on 14th Amendment grounds. Greene testified in court on April 22, and a decision is pending.

Can’t put people in jail without going to court and proving, beyond a reasonable doubt, that a) an insurrection occured and b) the defendent participated. According to the FBI there was no high level co-ordination, no extensive co-ordination. Translation: there was no insurrection. None of the guilty pleas or findings were for insurrection. Also, at least one defendent, was found to not be guilty of any charges because as the judge pointed out you can’t charge trespass when the Capitol police open the doors and waved him in,
Maher returning to his roots.
Doug Jones is a midget mind.
They only WISH it was an Insurrection, as Pelosi planned. They’re too stupid to know
IT FAILED!
Once you’ve seen the video of cops holding doors open for Patriots to enter, it’s impossible to believe the violent Insurrection fairy tale.
The Capitol police opened the gate for them then held the front door open for them. I’ve never seen an insurrection go down like that. That was more cooperation than insurrection. A set up for a false flag they could label an insurrection.
That there are January 6 insurrectionists is as fictitious as Biden winning the 2020 election. Neither happened!
First of all I have never listened to Bill Mauhr ever. My suggestion…when and if the GOP take the house and senate the first thing they should do is continue the Jan 6 investigation in a non-political manner. That way those people who are innocent of such charges can be freed. Then also there should be an investigation into Biden and his entire crime family. So let’s do both.
