Shoppers trapped as roof gives way at New Jersey BJ’s

A partial roof collapse at a New Jersey wholesale store had rescue crews searching for trapped shoppers.

Severe weather may have played a role in the roof of the BJ’s Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey, collapsing. Video shows unsuspecting customers browsing products moments before the ceiling caves in, resulting in a wave of water and debris filling the store.

Miraculously, nobody was injured and all 27 people who were reportedly inside the business at the time escaped. This includes two people who were partially trapped, but managed to free themselves.

Emergency crews were dispatched, and primary and secondary sweeps of the store were conducted.

“This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions,” said Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden, who praised first responders amid ongoing flooding in the area.

“Ocean Township Police Chief Michael Sorrentino urged motorists and residents to stay away from the area as emergency operations continue,” Fox News reported. “Travelers are asked to avoid Route 35, Park Avenue and Deal Road, specifically the stretch between Routes 18 and 35.”

Yeah, imho…. can see how it likely went down. Intense rain hit hard, water pooled up heavy on that flat roof (clogged drains didn’t help). You know how water weighs a ton when it builds up. Shouldn’t happen with good maintenance.
