It was a sad day on Monday when searchers recovered the body of the Texas Army National Guard member who went missing after heroically trying to save the life of illegal immigrants who were crossing the Rio Grande River near Eagle Pass last Friday.
It was believed that 22-year-old specialist Bishop E. Evans drowned after getting caught up in the river’s currents after he attempted to rescue the two migrants who may have been involved in the illegal smuggling of drugs and, according to the Texas Military Department, “appeared to be drowning while crossing the river from Mexico into the U.S.”
Evans, who had been deployed to the area for Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star which was launched last year in response to the humanitarian catastrophe that President Joe Biden’s refusal to secure the nation’s southern border has created, had been missing for three days before the worst fears were confirmed.
Governor Abbott delivered the grim news on Twitter, “We are heartbroken to learn of the death of SPC Bishop Evans. He heroically served his state & country.”
“I want to thank all rescue teams that worked to locate this soldier,” Abbott wrote. “Join me & Cecilia in praying for the family & friends of SPC Evans.”

Pictures of the young man whose life was cut short by his selfless devotion to duty and humanity were posted to Twitter where he was mourned, with many expressing their deep condolences to the fallen hero’s loved ones.

But not everyone was respectful in the wake of the terrible tragedy.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki hit a new low when she was asked about Evans during Monday’s White House press briefing, reacting in a loathsomely snarky, callous manner that once again showed that little matters to the current administration other than partisan politics and scoring cheap points against Republicans as the outgoing spinmeister passed the buck to Texas and its governor for his death.
“I don’t believe the White House so far has commented on the death of Bishop Evans, the 22-year-old National Guard specialist who drowned trying to save two migrants,” Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich said, offering Psaki a chance to go on record.
“Yes, thank you for that Jackie,” Psaki responded, “and the news of the confirmation that his body had been found was confirmed just a couple of hours ago. I would note that, of course, our heart goes out to his family and to his loved ones.”
“To confirm all the specific details,” she added, “he went missing on Friday, following a selfless efforts to rescue two migrants who appeared to be drowning, who are trying to cross a river in Mexico then went to the United States, that went into the U.S. of course, we know that National Guard personnel, including him, risk their lives every day to serve and protect others and again our hearts go out to his family.”
“I don’t have any, in case you may ask, I don’t have any updates at this moment in terms of the president’s outreach but if that is something I can update you on this afternoon I will let you know,” she said.
Heinrich followed up, “Does the White House feel any responsibility for his death given that there’s reporting that he lost his life, allegedly trying to save two migrants who were smuggling drugs, this is a problem that you know, the administration has been facing for some time and has obviously been as we’ve been discussing getting some criticism on.”
“Does the White House feel at all responsible?” Heinrich asked. “And what more can you offer to people who you know are on the border, in border communities who are experiencing loss and trials like this?”
Psaki replied,” Well of, of course, we are mourning the loss of his life and we are grateful for the work of every National Guardsman, I would note that the National Guard work for the states, so he is an employee of the Texas National Guard and his efforts and his operation were directed by there, not by the federal government.”
“In this effort in this apparatus, we’ve we’ve long stated that our immigration system is broken, there needs to be more done to invest in smarter security to have a more effective asylum processing system, and we would welcome any efforts to, for any elected official to work with us on that,” Psaki concluded.
Twitter users reacted to Psaki’s abhorrent remarks.
.@PressSec has MORPHED into her Trump-bashing/GOP-bashing/Texas National Guard duty-bashing @MSNBC role while standing before OTHER mostly LEFTIST propagandists in the guise of a taxpayer funded PRESS SECRETARY.
Time for Jen Psaki to LEAVE & join likeminded sister, @JoyAnnReidM

Did @PressSec Psaki just try to shift blame to the Texas government for lack of White House response to SPC Bishop Evans’ death? Doesn’t matter that he was TX National Guard; he was an AMERICAN soldier. @POTUS should have addressed this tragic loss for all of us. 💔

Hey @PressSec – Texas would not have needed to deploy its National Guard if your administration wasn’t completely inept on the protection of our nation’s southern border.
Your response to this man’s tragic death is absolutely inexcusable. Shameful.

Talk about heartless. Not a word came out of the WH regarding the TX National Guard agent who lost his life trying to save what turned out to be 2 illegals smuggling drugs. They were forced to comment only when @JacquiHeinrich of @FoxNews asked for a comment from @PressSec Psaki. https://t.co/Rq8mg1CgBO

The White House said nothing about the missing, National Guardsman all weekend. Today Jen Psaki is asked whether the Administration felt responsible because of the open border. She says the National Guard is under the states. She is cruel and insensitive.

I am disgusted and appalled at Jen Psaki's complete and utterly callous comments on the death of the Texas National Guard Bishop Evans, shame on you…What the hell is wrong with people!!

Psaki will soon be taking her act to MSNBC where many feel she will fit right in.
