Elon Musk says ‘woke mind virus’ making Netflix ‘unwatchable,’ causing subscribers to flee

Netflix, which reportedly plans to spend $18 billion this year on content, could be yet another example of what happens when a business enterprise goes woke.

Reacting to the news that the streaming service revealed it had lost 200,000 subscribers in 1Q 2022 which apparently resulted in a 20 percent-plus drop in share price in after-hours trading, Elon Musk chimed in on Twitter in that “The woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable.”

Making matters worse for its first subscriber exodus in 10 years, the streaming giant reportedly admitted that it is projecting the loss of two million subscribers in the second quarter.

Quirky and visionary Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk, who is trying to buy Twitter in the name of free speech, also agreed with a social media user who claimed that the “woke mind virus is the biggest threat to the civilization.”

“By Wednesday morning before market open, Netflix shares were down by 27%. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Netflix shares were on course for their worst day in nearly a decade,” Fox Business reported. “The company projected an even greater loss of two million subscribers in the second quarter, meaning it would end the first half of the year down 7.8 million subscribers than from what Wall Street was expecting.”

In general, things changed on Netflix from its original mission when it switched from being a movie and TV library to a producer or acquirer of original content. In part, this was necessitated when media conglomerates began to set up their own streaming operations rather than license out their material.

With obviously some exceptions, many feel that much of the Netflix-branded content is mediocre, filled with cliches, and often loaded up with apparently contagious identity politics.

For that reason, to which Musk may have been alluding, “watching” Netflix for many subscribers, who have recently been hit with subscription price hikes, often means fruitlessly scrolling through the offerings without ever finding anything that seems reasonable or entertaining to actually watch.

“The tech firm has pinned the blame on the emergence from binge-watching during lockdown, the success of rival platforms such as Disney+, Apple TV, Now TV, Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount, the cost-of-living crisis, and pulling out of Russia in response to Putin’s horrific invasion of Ukraine,” the Daily Mail explained in the context of the dismal Netflix first-quarter numbers.

Musk also agreed with another Twitter user who claimed that “Not just Netflix. Movies in general, videogames, TV, it’s all infested with current year trend woke garbage for fear offending a green haired freak next to the ban button…”

The world’s richest man also made a programming suggestion: “Can they please just make sci-fi/fantasy at least *mostly* about sci-fi/fantasy?”

“On Tuesday, Netflix made no reference to customers who have grown increasingly alienated by its woke content and close Democratic party affiliations. Netflix’s top executives backed the campaigns of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as those of radical leftists like Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, whose soft-on-crime policies have led to a spike in homicides and other violent crimes,” Breitbart News observed.

Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings ponied up $3 million to oppose the September 2021 recall of far-left Calif. Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom. Various Hollywood luminaries also opened their checkbooks to help lockdown-loving Newsom stave off the effort to oust him.

As an exemplar of its apparent woke direction, Netflix previously signed Barack and Michelle Obama to a reported $50 million deal to produce documentaries. Netflix also reached an agreement with Prince Harry and progressive princess Meghan Markle that is allegedly worth about $100 million-plus, although some have questioned the accuracy of that contract amount.

Ironically perhaps, currently trending on Netflix is its documentary about Musk and SpaceX called “Return to Space.”

  1. Netflix doesn’t understand its fan base. Wokesters expext everything in life to be free, so they’re not paying to watch radical leftist garbage, and those who do understand that you have to pay for things aren’t interested in the leftist garbage. Thus: Go Woke–Go Broke. :-D

  2. I saw a movie the other day on Netflix “Other People” (2016) with Molly Shannon about a devoted Mother and her family dealing with her dying of cancer!
    The bigger story within the movie was
    Jesse Plemons character portraying a gay man not fully accepted by his family. There was a sex scene and even more disturbing was a young boy about 10 playing a transgender and did a very provocative dance in front of grownups while being videotaped by all their cellphones. Jesse’s character was the only one clearly disturbed by it and turned to everyone else and said shouldn’t we all be arrested by the police and nobody reacted because they were all smiling watching this young boy gyrating in short shorts and a wig!
    Poke out my mental eye and count me disgusted that Hollywood/Netflix was ok with that scene!

  4. Elon….don’t underestimate the effect of yet another price hike by Netflix on subscriber loss.

    Their response to lost subscribers will probably be another price hike!
