Former President Donald Trump officially endorsed “Hillbilly Elegy” author and venture capitalist J.D. Vance on Friday in a statement that openly admitted the Ohio Senate candidate has said “some not so great things about me” in the past.

The endorsement came despite massive pushback from Republican leadership in the state. Trump chose Vance, who was a Never-Trumper in the beginning, over other candidates who have been loyal to the former president from the get-go. Vance is said to have voted for Evan McMullin in 2016.

“In the Great State of Ohio, the candidate most qualified and ready to win in November is J.D. Vance,” Trump declared in an email announcing his endorsement. “We cannot play games. It is all about winning!”

“Like some others, J.D. Vance may have said some not-so-great things about me in the past, but he gets it now, and I have seen that in spades. He is our best chance for victory in what could be a very tough race. The Democrats will be spending many millions of dollars, but the good news is that they have a defective candidate who ran for President and garnered exactly zero percent in the polls. The bottom line is, we must have a Republican victory in Ohio,” Trump said, letting bygones be bygones in favor of securing a Republican win for Ohio.

Trump acknowledged that endorsing Vance was not “easy.” He said he genuinely likes and respects other candidates in the crowded race.

“I’ve studied this race closely and I think J.D. is the most likely to take out the weak, but dangerous, Democrat opponent—dangerous because they will have so much money to spend. However, J.D. will destroy him in the debates and will fight for the MAGA Movement in the Senate,” Trump’s statement contended.

The former president called Vance “strong on the Border,” “tough on Crime,” and willing to “hold China accountable.”

“It is time for the entire MAGA movement, the greatest in the history of our Country, to unite behind J.D.’s campaign because, unlike so many other pretenders and wannabes, he will put America First,” Trump asserted. “In other words, J.D. Vance has my Complete and Total Endorsement.”

Vance, a former US Marine, has stated that he regrets his previous comments about Trump.

“Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” he told Politico in 2021. “And I ask folks not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy. I think he was a good president, I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of flak.”

The endorsement is likely to anger a number of top Republicans in the state as well as many conservative voters. Vance once reportedly called Trump’s supporters “racists” and that hasn’t sat well with many in the red state.

It also comes on the heels of another controversial endorsement. Trump endorsed Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania who has taken a number of non-conservative stances over the years involving the border, abortion, guns, and climate change.

  1. I love that about Trump. He’s forgiving because he knows he’s forgiven. It’s not about egos and bravado, it’s about saving a country! He recognizes the times he’s in and that this battle is between good and evil. God continue to bless Donald j Trump!

  2. JD Vance is a true American dream story. Raised in the worst possible dysfunctional hillbilly environment, he went on to be Valedictorian at Ohio state, and go on to Yale Law school. He only said things about Trump that were true- like why did Trump have to shoot himself in the foot so often, and say so many dumb things like “I love Kim Jung Un” the North Korea dictator. I loved Trump, gave the maximum amount of money allowed to his campaigns- and think he was the greatest president in my lifetime – but he did do a lot of stupid things that hurt him-that he did not have to do. That is basically what JD Vance said.

  3. The big question is, did Vance express his change of heart well in advance of announcing his candidacy? Or is it a matter of convenience?

We’ve seen some “true” conversions among anti-Trump conservatives. Is this one of those cases?

  4. I’m worried, there are still people close to Trump, with an agenda to deceive him, and giving him ill advice. Finding someone to really trust, is one of hardest and nearly impossible decision’s a leader has to make. In politics EVERYONE has their own agenda, and MOST are LIE to get what (THEY) want. POWER !! I can only hope those elected, that say they are Trump supporters, will be true to his values, America and it’s citizens. Personally, I don’t think America can recover from the pits of HELL we have allowed the Liberals, Democrats, some Republicans and Communist to put America and it REAL citizens in. Every office in America, from President to local dogcatcher has been taken over by these people. I feel the end is near.

  5. Because of the enormous benefit Trump was to this country, there are many who are reluctant to see any errors he might make and simply trust his “instincts”. I voted for him each time and I would vote for him again, but his very weakest trait is his record concerning people to whom he gives power or leaves in positions that have power.

  6. Before you judge you should read “Hillbilly Elegy” or listen to J.D. Vance. He is a bright young man from working class roots who made it through Yale Law School and intimately knows the tactics and hypocrisy of “blue blood” elitists. Trump has always had great instincts and he is right about this guy.

    1. LMFAO! You don’t/CAN’T possibly believe that, do you? But then again, there’s Kool-Aid drinkers all over this site. So you probably do …

  7. Love Trump! But sometimes his choice of people in his admin were not good – he did it because he “liked them” and many stabbed him in his back and was part of the ongoing problems he had. Not sure about JD and hope he is not making the same mistakes

  8. I suppose I get it. I was very skeptical of a President Trump in 2016 myself. I voted for him reluctantly. However when I seen what he did with my vote in 4 years what no other politician ever did in 40 I was a fan. Or a cult if you listen to the left.
