A number of Republican leaders in Ohio are urging former President Donald Trump to not endorse “Hillbilly Elegy” author and venture capitalist J.D. Vance, who at one time was labeled a “Never Trumper,” in the upcoming crowded GOP Senate primary.

NBC News is reporting that multiple sources close to Trump claim that he is preparing to endorse Vance.

“Former President Donald Trump plans to endorse J.D. Vance in Ohio’s crowded Senate GOP primary, according to three sources with knowledge of his decision,” the media outlet reported.

“In recent days, Trump has begun calling donors and advisers to get their opinions on endorsing the ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ author, but he held off under intense pressure from the rival Republican campaigns of Josh Mandel and Jane Timken, sources said,” NBC News noted.

Trump has been slow in endorsing a candidate in the race. Politico reports that Ohio Republicans are trying to keep him from endorsing Vance.

Ohio is a stomping ground for Trump, so it was a bit surprising when a polling firm that is linked to candidate Josh Mandel put out a memo that claims Trump’s endorsement of Vance would not help him win the race. Trump is seen as a kingmaker in the Republican Party and that is especially true in red states such as Ohio.

“J.D. Vance will still lose even with President Trump’s endorsement,” proclaimed Remington Research Group president Titus Bond. “J.D. Vance is widely known by Republican primary voters for his Never Trumper comments and previously calling Trump supporters ‘racists.’ Since he is already known to Ohioans as a self-proclaimed ‘Never Trumper’ and voters will forcefully be reminded of that, Vance will still lose even with President Trump’s endorsement.”

Three-dozen County Republican Party chairs and a number of other high-ranking party members penned a letter to the former president attempting to remind him that Vance had “referred to your supporters as ‘racists’ and proudly voted for Evan McMullin in 2016.”

“While we were working hard in Ohio to support you and Make America Great Again, JD Vance was actively working against your candidacy,” the letter points out. “He referred to your supporters as ‘racists’ and proudly voted for Evan McMullin in 2016. Importantly, JD Vance is not, and has never been a registered Republican. To have someone who has not voted in a Republican primary carrying the mantel for the party is troubling.”

“We do not support JD Vance for the aforementioned reasons and would urge you not to endorse anyone in this race,” the letter states, bluntly requesting that Trump not weigh in during the Ohio primary.

Club for Growth President David McIntosh, who supports Mandel according to Politico, reportedly asked Trump to not endorse Vance as well.

Others who are supporting Mandel are attempting to persuade Trump to throw his support behind the Iraq War veteran.

Mandel is said to have called candidate Mike Gibbons a “p***y” during a debate in March and Trump allegedly called his behavior “embarrassing,” according to Mediaite.

The primary will take place on May 3, so there is not a lot of time left for a nod from Trump and it should be noted that an official endorsement has not been issued.

The winner of the primary will run against Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) in the general election.

  1. A wise leader listens to those around him who are “on the scene.” When you have 3 great MAGA candidates in the race, step back and let things play out on their own. Micro managing is not a virtue of a great leader.

  2. (J.D. Vance is widely known by Republican primary voters for his Never Trumper comments and previously calling Trump supporters ‘racists.’)-

Bullshat! Vance is the true America First candidate. The “free” trade and mass immigration for cheap labor Establishment are afraid of him, want to keep it a corporate RINO seat.

  3. Doc OZ and JD Vance are not the ones. Problem with Trump is he thinks these guys are his friends and really they are not. That is a big flaw that Trump has.

  4. Trump still has bad advice from bad people around him. There are sooo many FAKE republicans that will vote with the Communist Liberal Demorats. He needs to find really trustworthy people, not in politics, to investigate these people first. Trump wasn’t viscious enough in his Presidency. We need to be more like the Demorats. Heartless and relentless. Unfortunately while this world stands, that is what controls it. DIG IN !!!

  5. I wonder what Ohio has against J.D. He seems like a man who has lived a life that would teach him a lot. He’s a veteran, a law school educated man, a family man, and perhaps he’s learned a lot about Trump, and watched how Trump led and kept his word, that J.D. has changed his mind. WE ALL CHANGE OUR MINDS FROM TIME TO TIME, AND i THINK HE WOULD BE A GREAT ASSET TO THE CONGRESS, Wrote a good book too.

  6. Looks like the Ohio RINOS are terrified of Mr Vance – good reason to vote for him !

  7. Hard to call based on this article. We know some early anti-Trumpers have completely reversed their positions after watching him in office.

Attacks by other candidates are not necessarily convincing.

What do we know about Vance’s positions today? Have they evolved over 4-5 years or is his support a newfound convenience?

  8. Just remember, Trump was snookered into endorsing Romney because the polls were close. Romney never appreciated this kind act from President Trump.

  9. I appreciate Trump’s opinion, he’s got great instincts. Ohio will be well served by any of the GOP candidates. But there are a whole lot of people out there who were against Trump and changed their minds. Vance admits it, at least he admits he can “evolve”….LOL. It’s the corrupt anti-Trumpers like Cheney, Kinzinger, Romney, Murkowski etc who need to be ejected. And soon.

  10. It will be a terrible mistake for Trump to endorse Vance. I am a Trump supporter, but I’m voting for Mandel no matter what.

I admit I didn’t like Trump at first, but I did vote for him anyway, ended up loving him, but at no point would I have ever smeared his supporters no matter what. Vance was stooping into Hillary Clinton territory when he did that. I even believe it is a mistake to attack Biden voters, even though I can’t stand Biden. Never attack voters.

  11. I have somewhat of distrust of those who represent one side or the other and then switch sides. Just look at voting ballots, you have Dems running as Republicans just to get their votes. You should know the history of your candidates. It may take time to research them, but in the end, it is well worth it when you go to vote. Take your research papers with you, or jot down their names so you have them when you vote.
