Smug Germans laughing at President Trump’s warning probably don’t find it so funny now

Corporate media’s use of hyperbole when covering former President Donald Trump, which many view as vilifying any stance he took without fair consideration of his position, has once again highlighted the intellectual inconsistencies of the left in their attempts to discredit him.

Throughout Trump’s administration, he was keenly aware of the negative impact further dependence on Russian energy suppliers would have throughout Europe and particularly in Germany. As sanctions were being discussed at the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, videos from 2018 resurfaced with Trump warning the international community that Germany would be a “captive of Russia” if it moved forward with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

Now, as the conflict has persisted for nearly seven weeks and global markets have been devastated by massive disruptions in supplies, especially in energy, mockery of Trump’s prescient warning is taking center stage once again.

NowThis News produced this video following the president’s speech at the United Nations in Sept 2018 where he stated, “Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course…Here in the western hemisphere, we are committed to maintaining our independence from the encroachment of expansionist, foreign powers.”

As the assembly representing Germany is seen laughing at Trump’s remarks, the video is overlaid with snippets from a CNBC article written in July 2018.

Tom DiChristopher cited Trump where, at a press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May, he said, “I think it’s a horrible thing that you have a pipeline coming in from Russia, and I believe that Germany is going to be getting 50, 60 – or even, I’ve heard numbers of 70 percent of their energy coming in from Russia.”

The article goes on to argue the merits of Trump’s claim suggesting, “Germany is Europe’s largest economy, so it would be hugely significant if it was that dependent on Russia for its energy needs. However, the estimate is not accurate.”

DiChristopher added, “the problem with Trump’s claim…” is that “natural gas accounted for about 20 percent” of German fuel in 2016; “hardly the dominant fuel source,” he contended.

Fast forward to March 2022 and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has admitted before parliament that his nation has become too dependent on Russian energy. He did not want to sanction or boycott Russian energy because of the detriment it would cause to Germany.

As the video recirculated once again, it vindicated Trump with captions like, “Four years ago, President Trump was right- again!” from Rep Mary Miller (R-IL) and Bloomberg columnist Karl Smith simply stating, “Awkard,” the most notable call out came from former acting Director of National Intelligence and one-time U.S. ambassador to Germany, Ric Grenell.

In separate, but near-identical tweets, Grenell called out the creators of the video and by virtue corporate media for their hypocrisy in not shaming them for currying favor to a policy that benefitted Russia.

Aimed at NowThis team members Nico Pitney and Allan Piper, Grenell called them out for making, “this video giving aid and comfort to Germany’s Russia ties.”

“The Germans (post Merkel) have now announced they were wrong,” he went on. “And they should have followed Trump’s advice.”

Grenell called for their apologies for “aiding Russian aggression” and he is right to do so as the media has gone after some who are neutral on the Russian invasion or against American military intervention as being aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

If they hope to demonstrate anywhere the level of consistency that Trump has, after being proven right once again, they should be demanding explanations from NowThis.
