President Donald Trump warned Germany they would be a “captive of Russia” in 2018 because of their growing energy dependence to the Kremlin, and their laughter then has them looking foolish now.
Throughout 2018, Trump repeated his stance that NATO allied countries increasing dependence on Russian energy exports would put them in danger of someday being hostage to Russia. This was especially true of Germany.

“We’re protecting Germany, we’re protecting France,” Trump said of the disproportionate funding the United States had invested into NATO compared its other members. “We’re protecting all these countries…And then these countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russia where they’re paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia.”
Of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Trump said, “Germany is totally controlled by Russia. I think it’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia.”
He further warned that, “We’re supposed to be guarding against Russia, but Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia.”
Russia even came to Germany’s defense disputing the negative light that Trump was portraying both countries in. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “Supplies of pipeline gas do not lead to dependence of one country on another but to complete mutual dependence. That is a guarantee of stability and future development.”
Later that year at the United Nations annual summit in New York, Trump reiterated his stance despite the detractions and was met by laughter by the German delegation.

Others took to Twitter then to join in mocking Trump, believing they were as clever as the German diplomats portrayed themselves to be.
Hahahaha, the world is laughing “AT” you…….. Please stop embarrassing yourself, tRump!!!

Germany has spent more than $250 billion in green subsidies over the past decade and now they have become MORE dependent on Russian gas.

Doesn’t Germany have a major solar energy program? Sad I may know more than the president.

In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is beyond evident that Trump was correct in his assertion. Though the Nord Stream 2 sanctions have been reimposed following Biden’s removal of the Trump sanctions in 2021, Germany still finds itself diplomatically torn as further actions against Russia will undeniably hurt its own economy.
For example, while Italy agrees to support a removal of Russia from SWIFT, a major international payment system, Germany’s Finance Minister Christian Lindner said Friday that his nation is only “open” to the option but they are concerned about the consequences it would bring.
Furthermore, Germany has offered little support to Ukrainian defense, offering only 5,000 helmets that were delayed. The Ukrainians had originally requested the world’s fourth-largest weapons exporter to send them 100,000 helmets in addition to protective vests as aid. There is also further concern that Germany will not endure the shutdown of the Nord Stream pipeline long.
It didn’t take long after the tweet resurfaced for many to point out the obvious.
Guess Trump was right again.
