Chris Wallace, you may have heard, has a new program on CNN+ and it’s called, “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?”
Unfortunately, now we know who’s talking to Chris Wallace. As one of the first guests on his new show, Wallace invited Nikole Hannah-Jones, a rather notorious left-wing crackpot who is the driving force behind The New York Times’ equally notorious “1619 Project,” a revisionist enterprise that is attempting to rewrite history before our very eyes.
Case in point: On Wallace’s show, Hannah-Jones solemnly announced that the “Greatest Generation,” the brave men who liberated Europe and defeated the Axis Powers in World War II, were racists who “brutally suppressed” blacks. The exchange seemed to be an uncomfortable and disturbing one for Wallace, a registered Democrat, who was perhaps somewhat insulated during his time at Fox News, and unaware of the more extreme left-wing elements and ideologies that have captured his party in recent decades.
Chris Wallace made headlines in the mainstream press for his “brave” and “courageous” decision to quit Fox News and head for the far lusher and greener pastures of…well, CNN. The former host of “Fox News Sunday” let it be known in an interview — with The New York Times, of course — that he is a man of principle and conscience, and a zealous devotee of the truth, wherefore he was no longer able to continue with his position at Fox News.
“I just no longer felt comfortable with the programming at Fox,” he said. “I’m fine with opinion: conservative opinion, liberal opinion. But when people start to question the truth—Who won the 2020 election? Was Jan. 6 an insurrection?—I found that unsustainable.”
What Wallace does find sustainable is talking to people who fearlessly tell the so-called truth, rather than question it — and that apparently includes people like Nikole Hannah-Jones. During his conversation with her, he read aloud a passage from her “1619 Project” series in which she castigated the World War II generation for suppressing democracy by denying blacks the right to vote.
“Without the idealistic, strenuous and patriotic efforts of black Americans,” he read, “our democracy today would most likely look very different. It might not be a democracy at all. We like to call those who lived during World War II the Greatest Generation, but that allows us to ignore the fact that many of this generation fought for democracy abroad, while brutally suppressing democracy for millions of American citizens.”

Apparently unconvinced by this argument, Wallace asked his guest: “Again, I am in no way minimizing our terrible racial legacy. But in some of these things, aren’t you overstating?”
“If you have half of the country…cannot vote, have their vote violently suppressed, where they’re a single one-party, one-race rule in a region where about 30 percent of the population is black…would you consider that democracy?” Hannah-Jones countered.
“You’re telling me that a farm, that a kid coming off a farm in Indiana, or a kid who came from Brooklyn, was suppressing black people?” Wallace asked.
Without missing a beat, Hannah-Jones leveled sharp words at Indiana: “Indiana has the largest population of the Klan in the United States. The Klan was raised, was reached first in Indiana.”
It was an argument Wallace was unlikely ever to win, and perhaps he realized that by the end of the interview. When he observed that the young men from “ethnic neighborhoods” in Brooklyn and South Philly who landed at Normandy were not “brutally suppressing” blacks, Hannah-Jones had a simple rejoinder.
“Well, they were,” she said.
