In an inspirational video, a potential Republican challenger to radical U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) describes herself as a “survivor, a refugee, a mother, a black Muslim, but above all, I am a Minnesotan and an American, just like you.”
Shukri Abdirahman has a comparable backstory to Omar insofar as fleeing Somalia to escape the civil war there and then stuck with her family for several years in a refugee camp in Kenya. But that’s where the similarities with the high-profile Squad member appear to end.
It perhaps might be said that Abdirahman is a member of a much different squad.
Abdirahman is a 10-year U.S. military veteran who joined the service upon being motivated by the U.S. military’s “Black Hawk Down” operation in Mogadishu, Somalia. She went on to serve in Iraq.
“Ilhan Omar was given a second chance when America took her in — but chose to ridicule the very country that saved her life. When I was welcomed as a legal American citizen. I responded by joining the U.S. Army. Now I’m taking a stand to give hope to the people of Minneapolis,” Shu Abdirahman says in the caption to the powerful introductory testimonial shared on social media.
A single mother of three who says she was homeless at one point, Abdirahman maintains that her belief in the American Dream never faltered. Nor was she willing to become dependent on the government.

“Our lives, our pride, and dignity can no longer be bought in exchange for votes that only keep the elite in power who disappear and abandon us after election season is over — the self-aggrandized political class who do not represent the people,” Abdirahman asserted in the video narration.
According to her website, her husband, a fellow soldier, “suffered from PTSD, which led to their separation. Shu is a survivor of domestic abuse from the marriage.”
The Shu for Congress website explains that the Republican candidate’s legislative priorities include funding the police, securing the border, educational choice, and bringing back economic prosperity. “Her conservative principles are guided by her faith in God and her oath to the United States Constitution.”
“America had saved my life; the land of opportunity,” she affirmed in the video.
Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in the Minneapolis area is a solid-blue enclave, so any Republican candidate has an uphill climb in the general election. The GOP primary is scheduled for August 9, 2022.
On a hopeful note, her website indicates that “Shu is building coalitions with communities that have normally voted Democrat.”
Twin Cities resident and fifth-generation Minnesotan Royce White, a former National Basketball Association player, and Steve Bannon mentee, is also running as a Republican. White led several peaceful protests in Minnesota in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.
Anti-globalist White released a video of his own during which he described Omar as “a puppet for the establishment.”

In an uncharacteristic departure from her progressive ideology, Omar earlier this month condemned the doxxing of ordinary people who made small contributions to Canada’s Freedom Convoy.
Are pigs flying?! Conservatives stunned to find they’re ‘actually agreeing’ with Ilhan Omar https://t.co/DxU2mXpMyf
