Conservative commentator Candace Owens ignited a firestorm on Twitter after suggesting that the United States is at least partially at fault for the crisis in Ukraine, remarks that were harshly criticized from both the left and the right of the political sphere.

With tempers running hot after Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s stunning announcement that two pro-Russian “breakaway” regions would be recognized as independent and that military troops would be sent into the areas on a “peacekeeping” mission, raising fears of a revanchist territory grab across portions of Europe, Owens whacked the hornet’s nest and ended up being swarmed.

In a Tuesday tweet that probably didn’t go over as she may have expected, Owens wrote, “I suggest every American who wants to know what’s *actually* going on in Russia and Ukraine, read this transcript of Putin’s address. As I’ve said for month— NATO (under direction from the United States) is violating previous agreements and expanding eastward. WE are at fault.”

Owens added, “And spare me your ‘defending Russia’ nonsense,” lashing out to deflect the attacks that have befallen conservatives like Tucker Carlson who aren’t cheerleading the idea that the U.S. should rush to enter into another foreign war. “Remaining ignorant regarding grand scale politics which benefit NO AMERICANS other than the elites and their business interests in the region, plus the willingness to kill American sons and daughters to do it, is sickening.”

She followed up about twenty minutes later with a blistering take on “Democracy” and “Elites” who “send their media mockingbirds to convince the population “’democracy is at risk’ unless we intervene,” possibly a reference to the CIA’s infamous Operation Mockingbird, the agency’s Cold War program to enlist members of the press to spread propaganda.

“If you think America has never been the aggressor in war— you are not “pro-American” you are pro-ignorance. And your ignorance costs American lives,” she wrote in a subsequent tweet. “Stop listening to mainstream media. Start studying energy policy. Read transcripts from ALL world leaders to discern truth.”

The reaction was ferocious as Twitter erupted in condemnation for what was seen as brazen opinions.

Never Trumper Erick Erickson slammed Owens, “I remember when the ‘blame America’ crowd was decisively on the left,” tweeted the conservative blogger and radio host.

Former GOP congressman radio host and turncoat Joe Walsh all but openly accused Owens, Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, American First GOP Senate candidate JD Vance and Fox News primetime star Carlson of being in cahoots with the Kremlin.

“Just in the past few days,” he wrote, “Trump praises Putin. Mike Pompeo praises Putin. JD Vance praises Putin. Tucker Carlson daily pushes pro-Russian propaganda. Candace Owens praises Putin & blames America. That’s just 5. There’s lots more. The GOP is anti-democracy & pro-authoritarian.”

Tom Nichols of The Atlantic, which is one of the most preeminent mouthpieces of the establishment, did go there, accusing Owens of doing “Putin’s work for him,” one of the left’s first resort of shutting down opposing viewpoints as well as one which was constantly wielded during former President Trump’s four years in the White House, largely against him.

“A gigantic Death of Expertise moment from someone who has no idea what she’s talking about. Beyond stupid; destructive and doing Putin’s work for him,” Nichols wrote.

New York Times bestselling author and Russiagate conspiracy monger Seth Abramson joined the pile-on: “I wrote yesterday that the Trumpist right would take the part of Russia AGAINST the U.S. as part of a bid to gain illegal election aid from the Kremlin in 2022 and 2024, and that Candace Owens would help lead the charge. Just checking in on that observation today, and here we go.”

Many other lesser names fired their Twitter arrows at Owens.

She also raised hackles last week when she called for troops to be sent to liberate those who have been crushed under the boot of an authoritarian menace who is much closer to home than Ukraine.

Owens is no stranger to controversy, especially when it came to COVID and vaccines but this time, she could really be facing an onslaught as the war drums are beating louder by the day.
