Dem Rep Jeffries instantly forsakes his incarceration ideology, demands Rittenhouse be locked up forever

The left seems to have abandoned the bedrock legal principles of innocent until proven guilty and procedural due process, at least as it relates to the homicide trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. This cohort apparently includes mass incarceration for Hakeem Jeffries, a graduate of New York University School of law.

Others, such as MSNBC host Tiffany Cross, even want the presiding judge in the Kenosha, Wisc., proceedings kicked off the case.

The left, which is already dissatisfied with some of Judge Bruce E. Schroeder’s ruling during the trial, also became triggered when the judge’s phone rang in the courtroom with the “Proud To Be An American” ringtone.

Intellectually honest, progressive pundit, Glenn Greenwald, a longtime skeptic of the Trump-Russia collusion accusations that turned out to be unfounded, is holding the suddenly “pro-prison” left accountable, however, for its politicized and on-again, mostly off-again support of civil liberties.

On Wednesday, U.S. Rep Jeffries (D-N.Y.), shared this observation on Twitter: “Lock up Kyle Rittenhouse and throw away the key.”

What happened to the whole thing about criminal justice reform, prison abolition, the evils of the carceral state, the inherent pro-prosecution bias, rehabilitative justice? It all instantly disappears based if the accused has the wrong ideology. Then it’s: law and order!,” Greenwald responded as part of a longer Twitter thread.

Jeffries is the same social justice advocate who last year, on the same platform, wrote “end mass incarceration” and “defund the prison industrial complex.”

In a social media exchange with her pal, Elie Mystal, MSNBC’s Cross asked The Nation’s “justice correspondent” about “how can this judge be removed?”

“The exchange came after Judge Bruce Schroeder lashed out at prosecutor Thomas Binger for his conduct in the case for issues that included asking Rittenhouse to explain why he remained silent around police after the August 2020 incident in which he shot three men and killed two in Kenosha, Wisconsin,” Mediaite reported.

Improper references to Rittenhouse previously exercising his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination have raised the possibility, perhaps unlikely, of the presiding judge declaring a mistrial.

“I was astonished when you began your examination by commenting on the defendant’s post-arrest silence. That’s basic law; it’s been basic law in this country for 40 years-50 years. I have no idea why you do something like that…,” the judge admonished Binger.

Mystal was not optimistic about replacing the trial judge, which prompted Cross to admit that it made her “depressed, disgusted, but not surprised.”

“Realistically, he can’t be. He’s elected. Even if he’s disciplined later by the state (which he won’t be) there’s nothing for it for *this* trial. And if [Rittenhouse] gets off, he can’t be re-tried because of Double Jeopardy. So, like I said two weeks ago, Rittenhouse is gonna walk,” he asserted.

Mystal is the same legal analyst who claimed, without evidence, that instead of kitchen-table issues, white, non-college-educated voters care more about “using their guns on black people and getting away with it.”

In his thread about the Jeffries tweet, Greenwald also pointed out the following:

I also don’t believe the people saying this have watched much or any of the trial. They’re instead demanding a now-18-year-old be imprisoned for life because they know their political followers want to hear that or they’re looking for positive social media attention: both gross.

With both Rittenhouse and the 1/6 defendants, it’s absolutely bizarre (and more than a little grotesque) to watch liberals jettison every criminal justice reform principle they claim to believe because of the ideology of the accused, and suddenly turn into pro-prison fanatics.

This actually all started with Russiagate. They wanted people like Michael Flynn imprisoned for years for a “crime” — lying to the FBI — that liberals like Ruth Bader Ginsburg long argued shouldn’t even be a crime. The only crime they want punished is rejection of liberalism.

Greenwald also called out “Squad” member Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.):

In addition to Greenwald, Twitter is reacting in a big way. Here is just a sampling:
