Using his mixed martial arts training, a Virginia man fought off three would-be alleged carjackers.
In addition to perhaps picking the wrong potential victim, i.e., someone who has a particular set of skills (to quote Liam Neeson’s memorable line from the movie “Taken“), the alleged suspects’ attempt to flee the scene in the vehicle, moreover, was apparently thwarted because the ability to operate a stick shift has become a lost art.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of Anytime Fitness in Stafford, Va., which is about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C., on Tuesday at about 5 p.m. when the attackers allegedly used a large wooden stick to assault the victim and grab his car keys.
Because stealing the vehicle turned out to be a non-starter as it were, they wound up bolting the area in their own vehicle.
This prompted a high-speed chase on I-95 by Stafford County Sheriff’s deputies after the suspects allegedly refused to pull over. At one point, the suspects were dangerously heading against the flow of traffic in the HOV lane. A deputy described the maneuver as a potentially “tragic situation.”
After a foot pursuit and officers setting up a perimeter, cops apprehended the suspects with the assistance of a K-9, according to the agency. Fortunately, no motorists were injured in the wrong-way driving escapade.
In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office explained what happened after the agency received multiple 911 calls about an attempted car theft.
Once on scene, deputies learned the suspects had approached the victim wielding a wooden stick and struck him several times in an attempt to steal his car. The victim, trained in mixed martial arts, fought back against the attackers. One of the suspects was able to obtain the victim’s car key and attempted to steal the car. The suspect was stymied by the manual transmission and had no clue how to drive the car. Additional gym patrons rushed out and assisted in thwarting the robbery attempt. All three suspects were able to get back to their vehicle and flee the scene…
The suspects, men ages 18, 19, and 20, are currently in custody in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. Charges against them include carjacking, robbery, and conspiracy.
Although the trio of suspects, in this case, are all adults by a few years, law enforcement authorities acknowledged over the summer that an increase in underage carjackings represents a challenge for police departments in and around the nation’s capital.
The D.C. Police, for example, formed a task force of detectives to focus on carjacking offenses in February 2021 after a nationwide increase in related crimes.
In general, violent lawbreaking of all kinds is surging in municipalities controlled by soft-on-crime Democrats. Parenthetically, an Atlanta city councilman and mayoral candidate who had previously voted for police defunding was allegedly more or less carjacked by a group of pre-teens back in May.
