Palm Beach County’s war against school kids

Harassed, forced to eat lunch alone and silently in the hallway, multiple suspensions, removal from class, and escalating threats, all used, not against a drug-dealing delinquent, but a seven-year-old girl who won’t wear a mask.

Fiona Lashalls is a precocious second-grader attending Discovery Key Elementary in Lake Worth, Florida, and is defying the mask mandate imposed by the Palm Beach County School District.

Fiona is supported in this by both of her parents.

Discovery Key is an excellent school that ranks in the top twenty percent of all schools in Florida, and Fiona is a good student who enjoys school.

The PBC school board defied an executive order issued by Gov. Ron DeSantis on July 30th that banned school mask mandates and carried strict penalties for incompliant school board members. A county judge in Leon County later ruled the DeSantis ban invalid, but the First District Court of Appeal ruled in the governor’s favor Friday and reinstated his ban on mask mandates.

The PBC school board is breaking Florida law with their mask mandate.

Bailey Lashalls, Fiona’s mother, told me, “There is no way for masks to be effective on children.  Let’s face it, the most well-educated surgeons in our country can’t prevent bacteria growth on their masks in an operating room after 2 hours.

“Do we really believe a bunch of elementary-aged kids can do better?”

Even mention the word “mask,” and many will start screaming, “But the science, the science!”

According to a recent, well-researched report by the liberal New York Magazine, “The Science of Masking Kids at School Remains Uncertain,”  – “mask science” isn’t science at all.

“While the protective value of a mask mandate for children in school seems, at best, uncertain, experts have concerns about the potential downsides of them in a learning environment.”

The science is uncertain, but the punishing of little Fiona is not. The following is the paperwork documenting the actions taken to punish the young girl.

I stumbled across Fiona’s plight when I saw a Facebook post by her mother.

After contacting Lashells to find out more, she permitted me to tell Fiona’s story.

But still, why mask the children?

Some will argue that the CDC says so, but it’s common knowledge that the national teachers’ union strongarmed the CDC on masks.

Teachers’ union leaders influenced CDC school masking guidance, emails show.

As The Palm Beach Post recently acknowledged, teachers in Palm Beach County are lagging behind the rest of us in getting vaccinated.

“Administrators know only that at least 47.5% of the 19,436 employees on the district’s health care plan had their shots by late August. The district employs more than 22,400, and roughly 13,000 of those are teachers.”

The Post goes on to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the accuracy of those numbers, and teacher vaccination rates may be higher, but 47.5% is what’s provable.

The rest of PBC has a 60.1% rate of vaccination.

The PBC school board plans to continue their illegal mask mandate and, just yesterday, suspended Fiona for three days.

This raises some interesting questions:

Why should parents obey the PBC School board and submit their children to mask mandates when the school board breaks the law by imposing them?

Why is Fiona being punished for doing what the school board is doing in defying Gov. DeSantis?

All seven members of the school board are Democrats.

Why don’t they listen to President Biden and mandate vaccinations for all school employees? If all school employees were vaccinated, there’d be no need to mask the children.

Is the school board just trying to embarrass Gov. DeSantis heading into an election year?

I’m not an expert, but I’m sure that forcing our children into masks like they’re little Hannibal Lecters isn’t good for them mentally or physically.

Maybe the people who run our schools should stop playing politics, grow up, and take care of our children by putting them first.
