AOC: Biden’s win would likely not have been certified if GOP had controlled the House

Radical New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat known for incessant hyperbole, has suggested that President Joe Biden may have not been certified as president had Republicans been in control of the House.

She posited the claim during a virtual town hall with equally radical New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman that was streamed Friday on YouTube.

During the question-and-answer portion of the town hall, the congresswoman was asked how she intends to hold accountable those of her Republican colleagues in the House who’d voted against certifying Biden’s election victory.

The question’s premise was flawed, because it’s perfectly constitutional for elected members of Congress to object to election results, which is why Democrats have themselves objected to election results at least three times in the past 20 years:

But instead of calling out the question, Ocasio-Cortez eagerly bought into its false premise.

“I thank heavens that we had a Democratic majority in the House that day, because frankly if we didn’t, we would have to be relying on a sizable amount of Republican members to do the right thing. And what we’ve seen in some of their votes is that many of them will fall in line, even when they know it’s the wrong thing to do,” she said.

The suggestion there was that it was somehow morally wrong for 121 House Republicans to object to the election results in Arizona and for 138 House Republicans to object to the election results in Pennsylvania. Both states were dogged by voting irregularities, some of which still remain unexplained.

Continuing her screed, the congresswoman then added, “If, for example, there was a Republican majority in the House, we do not know what would have happened in terms of certification of election results.”

She wasn’t entirely wrong. A total of 147 out of 195 House Republicans (or 75 percent of all House Republicans) objected to the election results in Arizona, Pennsylvania or both. And so there’s a chance that, had Republicans been in control of the House, the certifications would have failed. It’d depend on how many additional Republicans would have been in the House and how they’d have felt about the election.

However, even if the results had been rejected, that doesn’t mean Biden wouldn’t have eventually been put into office. The difference is that Congress would have first conducted a genuine investigation into 2020 election irregularities. But if those irregularities turned out to be the nothing burgers that Democrats had portrayed them as, then Biden’s election victory would have eventually been certified.

Listen to the congresswoman’s remarks from the 57:50 mark below:

All this said, it appears that the narrative that Ocasio-Cortez was trying to peddle during the virtual town hall is that Biden would have never been certified and American democracy would have miraculously collapsed overnight had the GOP been in charge.

It’s a narrative that’s become a common refrain among the left. The same people who want Fox News host Tucker Carlson fired for insulting a general, who want children taught that being white is bad, who want people arrested for “misgendering” someone and who demand unquestioned fealty to big government and the security state are convinced that Republicans are the ones who pose a threat to democracy.

These are also the same people who’ve called for congressional Republicans to be arrested — yes, arrested — for allegedly fomenting the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S Capitol.

There’s no evidence that any Republican fomented the riot. But there is glaring evidence that a number of high profile Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, have sometimes subtly and other times glaringly supported and promoted actual insurrections against the U.S. government.

Two weeks after an Antifa extremist fire-bombed an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Tacoma, Washington back in 2019, she asserted that allegedly “marginalized” people “have no choice but to riot.”

After several violent left-wing extremists were arrested during a riotous “counter-protest” against a benign Straight Pride Parade in Boston later that same year, Ocasio-Corrtez smeared the event as a “white supremacist parade” and promoted a bail fund for the “counter-protesting” rioters, some of whom had attacked police officers:

And during the destructive, violent, and sometimes deadly Black Lives Matter riots that engulfed the nation last summer, the congresswoman published an Instagram video in which she equated giving up rioting to “asking for … the continuation of quiet oppression.”

As to the Jan. 6th riot that Democrats keep calling an “insurrection,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed during the town hall that Republicans oppose forming a commission to investigate it because they’re trying to hide something.
