Actor Anthony Edwards has accused a Hollywood producer of sexually molesting him when he was a kid.
The “ER” actor, who also played Nick “Goose” Bradshaw in the 1980s hit “Top Gun,” wrote on Medium Friday that he and his best friend were molested by writer and producer, Gary Goddard.
A charge that Goddard denies.
“I was molested by Goddard, my best friend was raped by him — and this went on for years. The group of us, the gang, stayed quiet,” he wrote in a piece titled “Yes Mom, There is Something Wrong.”
Edwards, who is now 55, said that “my mother opened the door for me to answer honestly about the rumors she had heard about Gary Goddard — who was my mentor, teacher and friend — being a pedophile,” but that he denied it at the time.
Edwards said he ran into Goddard at an airport 22 years ago and that the producer “swore to his remorse and said that he had gotten help.”
The actor said he is coming forward now to help other victims of abuse.
“Right now, there are children and adults who want to talk. Right now, there are people who have witnessed this kind of abuse but don’t know how to help. Right now, there are millions of victims who believe that the abuse they experienced was somehow their fault,” he wrote.
In a statement issued by spokesman Sam Singer, Goddard denied the charges.
“Gary first met Anthony more than 40 years ago. Gary was a mentor, teacher and a friend to Anthony, which makes this story all the more disturbing to him. As to the allegations that Mr. Edwards made in his post today, I can unequivocally deny them on Gary’s behalf,” he wrote.
“Gary played an important role in helping start Anthony’s acting career and acted as his personal manager. He has nothing but the greatest respect for Anthony as a person. Gary is saddened by the false allegations,” Singer added.
“The post by Anthony, as well as many of the news stories today reference a legal claim made against Gary approximately four years ago regarding sexual harassment. The complaint was demonstrated to be fraudulent as it was completely fabricated, and ultimately withdrawn by the complainant and his attorneys,” he said.
The accusations came on a particularly busy week for sexual abuse allegations.
Alabama senate candidate Roy Moore was accused by a woman claiming he sexually assaulted her when she was a 14-year-old girl.
A male model also accused actor George Takei of sexual assault that he said happened in the 1980s.
Both Moore and Takei have denied the accusations against them.
Comedian Louis CK admitted to sexual misconduct against several women who charged him this week.
That came days after actor Charlie Sheen was accused of raping a 13-year-old Corey Haim on a movie set 30 years ago.
Adding to the list of revelations, pop singer Mariah Carey was accused of sexual misconduct by her former male bodyguard this week. Carey has not addressed the charges.
