Newsweek gets two-fer of offending conservatives and Irish-Americans in bigoted hit piece

In an effort to go after conservatives, Newsweek magazine went on a bigoted tangent against Irish-Americans.

The magazine published an article on Tuesday titled “Why are all the conservative loudmouths Irish-American?” that said “putative Irishmen are now the face of the hard Right.”

The author, Van Gosse, lamented the fact that Irish newscasters used to be a stronghold of the Democrat Party but are no longer.

“Now we have angry loudmouths with names like O’Reilly, Hannity, Buchanan, and, lurking back there with his Cheshire smile, the dissolute but scary Bannon,” he wrote.

Rather than acknowledging that Irish-Americans, like all Americans, have varying opinions of social and political issues, the author instead assumed that the community had switched sides.

“At some point since 2000, I noticed that the right-wing chorus pontificating from screens in bars and shops was filled by men with names like Hannity, O’Reilly, and Buchana,” he wrote.

“Then came Bannon’s ascension as Trump’s eminence grise , and it seemed impossible to ignore. This can’t be accidental. Why have these white men come to the fore, rather than a more multicultural Catholic cohort —a Pole, an Italian, a German, and so on?” Gosse asked.

He argued that they “can be traced to Joe McCarthy’s rise to stardom,” but Fox News host Sean Hannity called it out as the racist nonsense it appeared to be.

“Perhaps Newsweek should learn the history of people like my Grandparents who came to this country with no money, faced discrimination and poverty all in the hopes that their children and grandchildren could have a better life,” he said.

“Newsweek is a disgrace, and to publish such hatred and bigotry in this day and age is beyond the pale,” he continued. “Likely the reason Newsweek is a failing publication.”

The op-ed, and Newsweek, were destroyed on Twitter.

The op-ed originally appeared on The History News Network and was reprinted by Newsweek.
