CNN anchor mistakes ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ for French national anthem and her timing couldn’t be worse

Is it any wonder why CNN’s ratings have tanked below those of 50s sitcom re-runs?

While covering President Trump’s visit to France, CNN anchor Poppy Harlow mistook “The Star Spangled Banner” for “La Marseillaise.”

“Let’s just listen in to the French National Anthem for just a moment,” she said, pausing her own thoughts on what issues Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron — both newly-elected, might be most closely-aligned.

It wasn’t until 14 seconds later that she corrected herself.

“The U.S. — The American national anthem, I should say. Let’s listen in.”

During the interim, viewers watched as Trump had his right hand placed over his heart and Macon stood respectfully with his hands at his side.

Harlow’s mistake is understandable — she was talking about something else at the time — but 14 seconds to recover?

People on social media showed no mercy.

Not only did the timing of Harlow’s correction add to the embarrassment, but the whole mistake couldn’t have happened at a worse time for the embattled network. TV Newser reported recently that CNN’s ratings sank to 13th place to Fox News Channel’s first. The classic TV channel Nick at Night came in 11th.

HGTV, which hosts “Fixer Upper,” came in third, meaning that re-runs of Chip and Joanna Gaines came in 10 places ahead of “The most trusted name in news.”
