A three-week-old baby was mauled to death after being left alone with three pit bulls while her mother talked to a friend outside.

The baby, Susannah Jean Murray, was alone with the animals in Kalamazoo, Mich. for about five minutes while her mother, Michelle Murray, spoke to another adult outside.

The injured child was discovered by another adult who went to check on her.

The three-week-old was rushed to the hospital where surgery was performed but the child died the next day, WWMT reported.

“Our sweet baby Suzie, a mere three weeks old, joined the angels in heaven,” the baby’s obituary read.

No one has been arrested so far, but the three dogs are being kept under quarantine in the Kent County Animal Shelter.

“When you have an infant or children who are unable to defend themselves, basically defenseless, an adult should always be in the company of a child especially a three-week-old,” Sgt. Terry Dixon, of the Grand Rapids Police Department, said.

“The breed of the pit bull, by itself, is not enough to condemn it. Any dog can bite,” he said. “This serves as a critical reminder to never leave a child unattended around a dog.”“When the incident occurred one of the three pit bulls had blood around its mouth. The other two did not,” Dixon added.

Neighbors said the animals were not friendly.

“I’d be scared because when the dogs get out the fence, they used to chase us,” neighbor Hawa Abdi told the Detroit Free Press.

“They are so mean and vicious,” neighbor Akilah Gordon added.

Another neighbor, Joe Day, was outraged that the children were left with the dogs.

“For them to leave the child like that was not thinking at all,” he said.

But other neighbors said that the dogs had never caused any issues, and one said the mother was breeding the pit bulls.

Two other children live in the house and child protective services has been alerted. But it is unknown what, if any, action had been taken.
