‘Former bleeding heart liberal’: Rockville rape of 14-year-old ‘changed my mind about a lot of my attitudes’

It’s easy to tell other people what to think until reality smacks you between the eyes.

As one Rockville, Maryland woman admittedly learned this week, espousing liberal policies often requires a disconnect from the real world.

Following the brutal rape of a 14-year-old girl by an 18-year-old illegal immigrant and a 17-year-old from El Salvador, both of whom were high school freshman, the woman called herself “a former bleeding heart liberal.”

“Now I’ve changed my position,” she said. “I thought the public schools should get all the dollars, now I’m thinking maybe people should be able to take their money and go to school wherever they want because, this changed my mind about a lot of my attitudes.”

“As a former bleeding heart liberal … I feel differently now,” she said.

The woman said she was not satisfied with school superintendent Dr. Jack Smith’s answer that this “event” should not change people’s minds about immigrants.

“The superintendent said ‘we’re not going to let this change how we feel about immigrants, we’re not gonna let this change how we feel about people who don’t speak English,'” she said. “It does change how you feel. You know? This girl was brutalized and it’ not that simple. Let’s just forget it and move on? They called it an ‘event.’ It’s a tragedy not an event.”

She said the PTA meeting she attended spent most of the time talking about what a great and secure school they are and didn’t directly answer the tough questions.
