‘USA Today’ calls for the Clinton Foundation to be ‘mothballed’ – forever

Calls for shutting down the scandal-scarred Clinton Foundation are gaining momentum.

After Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump earlier this week called for an independent special prosecutor to investigation the foundation operated by Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton and her former president husband, the list of those calling for the foundation to close is growing daily.

USA Today on Tuesday said in an editorial that the ersatz charity needs to be “mothballed.”

“On Monday, former president Bill Clinton belatedly announced plans to tighten the ethical safeguards for the Clinton Foundation, the family charity, to eliminate ‘legitimate concerns about potential conflicts of interest.’ The plans range from the laughable to the laudable, and they are woefully incomplete,” the article read.

“But the only way to eliminate the odor surrounding the foundation is to wind it down and put it in mothballs, starting today, and transfer its important charitable work to another large American charity such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.”

USA Today’s call follows demands from dozens of people who not only want the foundation closed, but investigated by the feds as well.

Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said, “No one is above the law.”

“The fact Hillary Clinton’s official schedule was full of meetings with Clinton Foundation donors is further evidence of the pay-to-play politics at her State Department,” he said in a statement.

“The Clinton Foundation must be immediately shut down and an independent special prosecutor be appointed to determine if access to Hillary Clinton was for sale.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said in a statement that “we must get to the bottom of what looks like a pay to play

“As a former federal prosecutor, the path is clear. The Clinton Foundation must be investigated now,” he said.

Even some noted liberals are taking notice.

Gail Sheehy, author of “Hillary’s Choice” and contributing editor to Vanity Fair, said on Wednesday’s edition of “The Takeaway” on WYNC that “the gut instinct of Hillary Clinton is to lock down. That’s been her Achilles Heel.”

“This is always the problem with the Clintons,” Sheehy said. “They never get around the story when there is an appearance of problems. They wait until the house is on fire until they actually take action.”
