Trump was all aboard selecting Pence for VP, then at the last minute, he made a midnight phone call?

Donald Trump confirmed Saturday that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence would be his running mate but, if CNN’s Dana Bash is to be believed, he was having cold feet mere hours before he made his pick public.

“Around midnight last night, so this morning, Donald Trump was on the phone with senior advisors trying to see if he could get out of this,” Bash said Saturday on CNN.

“By all accounts, if he were following his gut he would have gone with Chris Christie,” she said. “But everybody around him in the campaign apparatus had been making these moves to make it so, that Mike Pence would be his running mate.

“Flying him to New York — leaking it, basically, to the press that he was going to make the call (and) telling people in and around the Cleveland convention where conservatives, especially, are gathered ‘don’t worry, wink wink, nod nod, it’s going to be Mike Pence.'”

The rumor was corroborated by NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell.

The Trump campaign reached out to O’Donell shortly after that to “strongly deny” the report.
