A Nevada Democrat running for a U.S. House seat has alleged that Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., told him not to run because he is a Muslim.
A charge that Reid has categorically denied.
Jesse Sbaih wrote in an email to supporters, and posted on the Daily Kos, that Reid said to him “Let me be blunt, you are not going to be able to win because you are a Muslim.'”
Sbaih said he was offered an appointment in the weeks that followed to a position he “never applied for or expressed interest in to muscle (him) out of the race and to DC.”
He claims that he has been hindered from hiring staff and that Democrat donors have been advised to not support his campaign while his inexperienced opponent has been the beneficiary of endorsement from the party establishment.
Kristen Orthman, a spokesman for Reid, said the charges are false.
“Senator Reid did not say that,” she told the Washington Post. “Jesse Sbaih is a liar and that’s why he is going to lose.”
She said Sbaih was never told not to run.
“We never said he shouldn’t run for elected office. It was that, to run for a congressional seat, your first time, you’re going to lose. And you need more experience,” Orthman said.
