Photo of Target cashier goes viral when woman realizes the value of what she was witnessing

A young man’s act of kindness goes viral on the Internet.

Ishmael Gilbert, a cashier at Target in Glendale, Indiana, patiently helped an elderly customer count her change to pay for her goods when a customer in line behind her took a picture of the act and wrote about the experience on Facebook.

The customer, Sarah Owen Bilge, was initially agitated that she had to wait while the woman counted a pile of change and that the cashier, Gilbert, had to help her.

“Part of me, the part that had a long day at work, the part of me who had a 1 1 and 1/2 year old having a melt down in the cart, the part that had set an unnecessary timeline for Target and getting home, was frustrated with this woman and the inconvenience she had placed on me,” she wrote on Facebook in a now viral post.

Soon, however, she understood the value in what she was witnessing.

“BUT then I watched the young employee with this woman. I watched him help her count her change, ever so tenderly taking it from her shaking hands. I listened to him repeatedly saying “yes, ma’am” to her,” she continued.

“As I was watching him, I saw that Eloise was, too. She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change. I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger; furthermore, I realized that I too needed a refresher on this lesson.”

Gilbert’s mother, Amiee Smith Gilbert, said she was proud of her son and happy to see his kindness being highlighted, and that it could be an example for others to follow.

“I felt very proud that this young father was being acknowledge for his outstanding customer service and positive energy in the workplace,” she wrote on Facebook. “I have always tried my best to raise my children to respect everyone no matter their race, age or gender.”

“I asked Ishmael how he felt about his story and what did he learn from this he said ‘I want people to know that I AM a young hard working father trying to provide for my daughter,'” she said in another post and added that her son would like to appear on Ellen to tell his story.
