Mark Kelly’s World Cup wardrobe choice ignites backlash

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) posted pictures of himself in a Mexican soccer jersey at a World Cup watch party in Tucson, Arizona.

Mexico was taking on England this Sunday when Kelly shared his zeal for the sport (and the team) with social media. He also made the interesting decision to wear the jersey of another country’s team, despite Team USA still being in the running.

Look:

“Lots of people out in Tucson to watch Mexico take on England. Tucson and La Rosa sure know how to do the World Cup!” he wrote.

It’s understandable to root for a team you like during a game your home team isn’t playing in, and it’s also no secret that Arizona has a large Hispanic population that is likely rooting for Mexico despite living in the United States. But to see a US senator in another country’s jersey was just too much for many X users.

On a related note, England secured a 3-2 victory over Mexico, including scoring two goals in 98 seconds in the first half.
