Mexican president threatens legal action against Elon Musk for bold accusation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is reportedly considering legal action against X owner Elon Musk.

On Monday, Musk replied to a video of Sheinbaum refusing to return “to the war against the narco” element in her country, claiming it was “outside the law.” She said it was effectively “permission to kill without any trial,” leading many to question whether she was actually against the drug cartels that are terrorizing Mexico unimpeded.

Look:

“She’s just saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say. Let’s just say that their punishment for disobedience is a little worse than a ‘performance improvement plan,'” Musk wrote in response to the video.

During her daily press conference on Tuesday, Shienbaum indicated that lawyers were reviewing the situation.

“We are considering whether to take legal action,” she said.

But regardless of her feelings on the situation, pursuing a defamation lawsuit in the United States would be quite difficult, as the president would have to prove that Musk knowingly said something false or disregarded the truth while making the statement.

This follows the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera, ‘El Mencho,’ who was captured and killed by Mexican security forces, sparking a wave of violent backlash within the country.
