‘I remain committed to that promise’: Republican drops out of Senate race after Trump endorses his opponent

Daily Caller News Foundation

Republican Louisiana State Sen. Blake Miguez announced Tuesday he will exit the state’s Senate race and instead run to replace Republican Louisiana Rep. Julia Letlow, who is retiring from the House to run for the upper chamber.

Letlow announced her Senate candidacy in January to unseat Republican Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, days after she received President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Miguez — who announced his Senate run against Cassidy in June 2025 — said he is “redirecting” his Senate campaign “and its resources toward” a House bid to support Trump’s agenda, according to a statement he shared on social media Tuesday.

Cassidy was one of seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump during his 2021 impeachment trial following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“When I announced my campaign for the US senate last year, I promised Louisianans I would stand with President Trump and fight for an America First agenda that puts Louisiana families first,” Miguez said in the statement. “I remain committed to that promise, and I’m ready to deliver the kind of representation that will support President Trump and help advance the mission to Make America Great Again.”

The candidate also highlighted in the statement the large amount of money his campaign had accumulated over the last several months. Miguez started his bid for Congress with a $3.6 million war chest with $1.75 million being raised in the final financial quarter of 2025.

“We built a Louisiana coalition committed to conservative values and holding Washington accountable. I will always put America First and hold elected leaders accountable to the MAGA agenda – regardless of party,” Miguez’s statement added.

Miguez has served in the Louisiana State Senate since 2024 and previously spent nine years in the State House of Representatives — including four as majority leader.
