Bill Maher says Larry David no longer his friend after feud over Trump dinner

Comedian Bill Maher asserted that his friendship with “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator Larry David was over during an interview with The Free Press posted to YouTube on Monday.

Maher attended a dinner at the White House with President Donald Trump in March, prompting David to write a satirical New York Times op-ed in April, likening the comedian’s dinner to dining with Adolf Hitler. The Free Press’ Maya Sulkin asked Maher during the interview if he had lost friends due to his commentary.

“Fuck yeah,” Maher responded, adding, “Larry David certainly is not really my friend anymore.”

Sulkin asked if he had spoken to David since his NYT op-ed.

“No, I said my piece on my last show … I put him in my last editorial right before Thanksgiving, our last show,” Maher told her.

Maher ridiculed David on a Nov. 21 episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” saying his former friend had rejected his annual invitations to appear on the show, citing his lack of political knowledge. “Yeah, I get that now,” Maher quipped.

Maher made the dig on the show directly after criticizing people who opposed his dinner with Trump.

“This is so childish, so purely emotional — the people who got all butthurt because I had dinner with [Trump] — you know, because he’s Hitler,” he said. “Except he’s not. So unhelpful and dumb. Trump is the most supportive president Israel and the Jews ever had!”

Despite the left-wing backlash, Maher said on his “Club Random” podcast in November that he would like to have a second dinner with Trump.

When “Piers Morgan Uncensored” host Piers Morgan asked Maher in April whether he was friends with David after the op-ed, the comedian responded that he was.

“This wasn’t my favorite moment of our friendship,” Maher told Morgan.

Comedian Dave Chappelle also criticized Maher during his Friday Netflix special titled “Dave Chappelle: The Unstoppable…,” according to the New York Post.

“Bill Maher, the famous comedian, I’ve known Bill since I was like, 18, 19 years old, and I’ve never said this publicly, but fuck that guy,” Chappelle said. “I’m so fucking tired of his little smug, cracker-ass commentary.”

Chappelle’s criticism followed Maher’s refutation of his claim that it was “easier to talk” in Saudi Arabia than the United States, according to the NYP.
