The clock is ticking down to the first Republican Party presidential debate that will signal the official start of the 2024 primary season and RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel was “holding out hope” that the party’s frontrunner would be there.
With an overcrowded field of candidates seeking to score points by attacking former President Donald J. Trump, they may be left with little choice but to maul each other with the star attraction looking like a no-show at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum for Wednesday night’s nationally televised debate.
McDaniel appeared on “Sunday Morning Futures” where she told host Maria Bartiromo that she isn’t ready to write off the embattled former president just yet although it was just wishful thinking with Trump continuing to send signals out that he may have better things to do.

“So let’s take a look at the lineup there. I think that President Trump will not be there on the debate night. What are your thoughts on that and who did make the debate stage?” asked Bartiromo.
“I’m still holding out hope that President Trump will come!” McDaniel replied. “I think it’s so important that the American people hear from all the candidates.”
She then changed the subject to who will be in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
“But there’s a lot of candidates that have qualified, we’re at seven right now that have officially qualified with the small-dollar donations, with the polling threshold in the pledge,” McDaniel said, adding, “And then we’ve got some that are on the cusp. So we’re going to be looking at polls the next few days or three or four that are waiting for one percent in one more national poll to make that debate stage.”
“And you’ve got great diversity, women, African-American,” Bartiromo said, noting the diverse field. “Really across the board, we just heard from Vivek Ramaswamy last week. Larry Elder, perhaps making the debate stage, tell me about the lineup this year and how that’s different from what you’ve seen in past?”
“You know the Republican Party represents the diversity of America,” McDaniel correctly pointed out.
“Despite what the mainstream media says. You look at what we’ve done in Congress with the many candidates, we’ve elected and our stage reflects it,” she added as she listed some of the names of the GOP’s very diverse field of hopefuls.
The former president had kept his cards close to the vest but hours after McDaniel’s interview aired, he took to Truth Social to announce that he plans on sitting this one out and possibly future debates as well.
“New CBS POLL, just out, has me leading the field by “legendary” numbers. TRUMP 62%, 46 Points above DeSanctimonious (who is crashing like an ailing bird!), Ramaswamy 7%, Pence 5%, Scott 3%, Haley 2%, Sloppy Chris Christie 2%, ‘Aida’ Hutchinson 1%. The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had, with Energy Independence, Strong Borders & Military, Biggest EVER Tax & Regulation Cuts, No Inflation, Strongest Economy in History, & much more. I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!” Trump said.

Trump previously expressed reluctance about walking into an ambush with no-hopers looking to score a kamikaze attack on him, and it has been reported that he could upstage the rest of the field by sitting down for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his “Tucker On Twitter” show on the night of the debate.
