Tourist who carved names into Colosseum pleads ‘oopsie daisies’ in apology letter

This is what happens when you fall asleep during one too many History classes in high school.

Ivan Danailov Dimitrov, a 27-year-old man, is apologizing after carving “Ivan+Hayley 23” into a brick of the Colosseum of Rome in June. His excuse? He claims he didn’t realize the structure was ancient. (Pro-tip: You can avoid a lot of unnecessary legal drama if you just don’t carve your name into any structure, ancient or otherwise.)

The action naturally drew massive outrage not only from Italians but social media as well. It is likely because of this pressure that Dimitrov opted to craft an apology letter in which he effectively pleaded “oopsie daisies” in hopes people might take pity on the culturally-ignorant young man.

“I admit with deepest embarrassment that it was only after what regrettably happened that I learned of the antiquity of the monument,” the letter, which was shared with NBC News, begins. The young vandal claims that he is “aware of the gravity of the act committed” and wishes to extend “my heartfelt apologies to the Italians and to the whole world for the damage done to an asset that is, in fact, the heritage of all humanity.”

“I am also aware that similar conduct in my country would have resulted in much more serious consequences,” the accused vandal continued. “For this reason I accept all responsibility and will make sincere and concrete efforts to redeem myself and make up for the mistake I have made.”

In a statement exclusive to NBC News, Dimitrov’s attorney Alexandro Maria Tirelli revealed that this client has already “made a plea bargain request, the boy will certainly take advantage of the suspended sentence.”

Maybe he should be sentenced to 120 hours of historical landmark education, in case he decides to take another vacation.
