New Dem commissioner asked to lead pledge of allegiance in awkward moment: ‘You don’t know it?’

A newly elected Democrat member of the Miami City Commission is being criticized for not being able to recite the Pledge of Allegiance before her first meeting on the job with the fiasco being caught on an embarrassing video and posted to Twitter where it has drawn a strong reaction from users of the social media platform.

The new commissioner, Sabina Covo, who was just elected in a February 27 special election by emerging from the crowded field of 13 candidates with nearly 30 percent of the vote, appeared at the Thursday meeting where she was welcomed with the honor of getting to deliver the 31-word verse promising loyalty to the star-spangled banner and to the republic for which it stands.

“Commissioner Covo, could you lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, please,” asked the commission’s chairwoman Christine King only to soon find out that the Democrat newbie wasn’t up to the occasion.

“You don’t know it? Ok,” King said after the awkward moment before the rest of the commission and residents who were in the audience said it for her, with Covo’s disastrous debut being captured for posterity and posted to Twitter by the account for the podcast Because Miami.

“Inauspicious debut for new Miami District 2 Commissioner Sabina Covo who, when asked by Chairwoman Christine King to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of yesterday’s city commission meeting, revealed she doesn’t know it,” the account tweeted.

Commissioner Covo flew into damage control mode, taking to Twitter on Friday morning after the meeting to claim that she was just suffering from a case of nerves.

“Serving the people of Miami is the honor of a lifetime. When you feel a responsibility is that important, nervousness is very normal, and I’m not afraid to admit that I was,” said the newest Miami commission member.

“The oath and pledge I took to our nation and to the residents of District 2 is clear and I am focused on honoring my promise to get things done for our community,” Covo added. “Which is why I am not focused on Twitter Talk – but rather on passing two very important pieces of legislation during my first commission meeting, including one that will provide affordable housing to foster youth. That’s leading through the very words in our Pledge of Allegiance and our promise to lead with ethics and integrity.”

Twitter users reacted with incredulity and anger at Covo’s inability to recite the Pledge as well as her lame excuse.

According to Florida Politics, Covo – an immigrant who was born in Columbia  – worked under former Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who despite being destroyed in the Democrat gubernatorial primary last year by feckless party-jumper Charlie Crist, was just tabbed to head up the demoralized cult of the blue jackass in the Sunshine State.
