First ‘non-binary’ Muslim lawmaker censured for ‘knowingly and willingly’ harboring trans suspect

The country’s first-ever “non-binary” Muslim lawmaker has reportedly been censured and stripped of her assignments for blocking Oklahoma state troopers from questioning a transgender rights zealot who’d been involved in the assault of both a lawmaker and a police officer.

In addition, state Rep. Mauree Turner, a Democrat, will remain without assignments until she issues a formal apology, including to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Her colleagues’ anger toward her stems from what happened during a protest at the Oklahoma State Capitol on Feb. 28th.

“[A] protester hurled water at [state] Representative Bob Ed Culver, R-Tahlequah, following the House’s passage of HB 2177 – a bill to ban gender affirming care for minors. The protester was then escorted out by an Oklahoma State Trooper,” according to local station KFOR.

“At the fourth floor stairwell on the southwest side, the protester threw the water again but this time at the trooper. That is when the trooper went in for an arrest. He followed the protester down the stairs until the [protester] became physical,” the station reported on Tuesday.

Watch the suspect’s arrest below, and take note of his friend in the blue/pink cape who follows him around:

After the incident, the protester’s friend evidently fled the scene to Turner’s office, where she then proceeded to “harbor” him.

“When we go up to the representative’s office, we were not allowed in, even from opening the door,” Trooper Eric Foster said, according to The Washington Post.

In a separate statement, Oklahoma State House Speaker Charles McCall described exactly what occurred.

“It came to the attention of law enforcement that the individual who fled was hiding in the official office of a member of the House,” he said.

“This member knowingly and willfully impeded a law enforcement investigation, harboring a fugitive and repeatedly lying to officers, and used their official office and position to thwart attempts by law enforcement to make contact with a suspect of the investigation,” the statement continued.

McCall added that he would not tolerate this.

“I want to make something very clear: I will not allow members of the House of Representatives to use their House assigned offices and official positions to impede law enforcement officers carrying out investigations or making arrests in the State Capitol. Our law enforcement officers leave their homes every day to serve and protect us, never knowing if it might be the last time they see their families,” he said.

“The House stands by our law enforcement, and will not allow what is an already dangerous and unpredictable job to become more dangerous due to the actions of a member of our body, The inappropriate, and potentially criminal, actions exhibited by this member of the House were deserving of censure, and the actions taken by the House today were both measured and just,”  he added.

Meanwhile, Culver, the lawmaker who was hit by water, decided to press charges against the original protester.

“If water being thrown on me had been the extent of the action taken, I would not have given it a second thought. However, I cannot stand by while our highway patrolmen are assaulted for simply doing their jobs,” he said in a statement.

“Taking all of that into consideration, I have decided to press charges against the individual who assaulted me and the patrolman and will cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation,” he added.

Yet to hear Turner and her allies tell it, they’re the victims.

“I know that I represent a culmination of things that ya’ll deeply hate. I know it makes it easier for you to try to silence the people of House District 88 because we continuously hold you accountable. We push you to be better, to take care of Oklahomans,” she reportedly said Tuesday on the state House floor.

It’s not clear how she’s holding anyone accountable by harboring criminals.

“What happened last week in my office was the same thing that happens all the time. People do not feel represented or protected by the people in this body. They come to find refuge in my office. They come to depress from some of the most stressful times, and I understand them because I do it too,” she added.

“I think about how so many members on the other side of the aisle, after they make a bad vote to vote away the body autonomy of folks who have the ability to get pregnant, when they vote away the healthcare for trans Oklahomans, I understand that I’m a living, breathing manifestation that you get to take that anger out on,” she continued.

Turner also vowed to never apologize.

“I think an apology for loving the people of Oklahoma is something that I cannot do. It’s something that I actively refuse to do,” she said.

In a separate statement, Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD, went so far as to condemn the lawmakers who’d voted for HB 2177, versus the transgender zealots who’d attacked a lawmaker and the police.

“Transgender people are under attack by extremists who are baselessly trying to limit their private, best practice healthcare. Every Oklahoman and every American should be outraged that lawmakers are working overtime to target people, including their own colleague,” she said.
